My Boots

Yep those sure are my boots since Jack ask. We always hunted deer at Mel's grandmother's place west of San Antonio. As you may remember I have said here her place is now in San Antonio. The city has grown that much. We could run out and hunt late afternoon and get home after dark. I hated deer hunting season when the girls were babies because I had to stay home to care for them. When they were a little older we could leave them with his grandmother and I could go sit in the bind with Mel. I loved the quiet and even the sleet coming in on our heads through the hole in the roof. I could sit and count the daddylonglegs in the corners. Doesn't take much to make me happy but Mel wasn't happy when my stomach would growl. He would give me a dirty look so I would press my stomach as hard as I could to shut it up. When grandma moved to town we still went out in deer season. The girls were old enough to stay in the car and play games or look at books. I always packed them a little snack in a lunch box. We locked the gate at the road and told them if for any reason they needed us to honk the horn and we would come running. We weren't that far away. The only incidence was when we came back to the car they said a bull came up and hooked it's horns into the bumper and shook the car. Must not have scared them too bad they didn't honk the horn. Once Mel shot at a deer but it didn't fall. He was a good shot and thought he hadn't missed it so we went looking. As it was nearing dark he was on one side of a tree and I was on the other side. I heard the scary sound of a rattlesnake. If you've ever heard that sound you never forget it. I screamed and Mel came around and shot it. By then it was too late to continue to look for the deer and was I glad of that. When we got back into town I told him to take me somewhere I was buying some boots. We only found one place open, a discount shoe store. I didn't have much choice. I knew he was going to want to go back out the next afternoon and I wanted boots to wear. That snake had made a believer out of me. I had to buy men's boots and they were a little too big, had to take what I could find. Next afternoon we went looking. I walked directly behind Mel and held on to his belt loops stepping into his tracks as he walked. I figured he could clear the snakes out before my feet hit the ground. We didn't fine the deer or any snakes.

Bulls are just crazy aren't they? Silly things.
That was a good story.

I agree with Linda, this is a good story. Sherry never went hunting with me, she used the time to be with her dad and sisters. A rattler can sure make a believer out of you. Sherry is my ears and called my attention to one in the mountains or I would have been bit.
I really enjoy the stories. Thanks. Jack
I am hearing good things about the book, problem is it is about coffee and sticky buns. It makes Sherry want Sticky buns and Evelyn wants coffee. I just hope you get time to read it, time doesn't matter. Sherry will appreciate your latest comments. She usually gets to you first, but tonight she went to bed first.

I gave up hunting along time ago to many close calls with stray bullets coming my way.

Your story takes me back to those ole hunting days (boots and all). We rode horses to the woods sometimes, too. I'm happy to say I don't miss it one bit but sure glad I didn't miss doing it at the time :).....

I can just see you holding onto Mel's belt loops and traipsing through the woods being careful to avoid the snakes.... Rob took me up into the woods once to see where he goes deer hunting too... way up high on the side of a huge hill. I thought we'd never make it to the top. He has a buck proudly displayed in our family room and I named him Lucy. LOL. I suppose I should have thought of a boy name.
