Pretty Tag From Joyce

Run deer run, deer season is in full swing in our county. We went to the large ranch this morning to look for John's wild hog trap. We didn't find it but there are deer blinds and feeders all over the place since John gave it up. I had the chance to shoot a deer once with a large rack of horns but I couldn't pull the trigger. I loved to go deer hunting with Mel but not to kill, but to enjoy the quiet and watch the deer come out of the brush. We did eat the meat, he would never have shot and let it lay. If he thought he shot a deer and it ran off he would track it to make sure. We went hunting on his grandmother's farm west of San Antonio. I wish she could see that her farm is now in San Antonio. On second thought it's better that she doesn't know I think it would make her very sad. She would have never thought of charging her relatives to hunt but to pay her back we would all get together and haul up enough wood to last all winter. She still used a wood heater and cook stove. She still had a windmill and everyone would chip in to repair. She could cook so good on that old stove. Everyone brought food and she did most of the cooking. She had a large round table that was large enough for everyone to sit aound to eat and swap stories of the one that got away. Her old farm house had been very nice in its younger days. It had a built in buffet in the dining room and wide varnished base boards with tall windows. It had a large bathroom which was unusual for back when it was built in that area. I was told that it was grandma's bathroom and the men had to go outside. It had the old claw foot tub. After her husband died she lived out there alone but there came a time when her children didn't feel it safe for her to live out there alone so they insisted she move into town. She was never happy in town. You can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl and that was the way it was with grandma. She was a quiet softspoken woman. We all have so many fond memories of grandma and her farm.

I yell at the neighbor when I see him going up into the woods behind us to deer hunt...."leave Bambi alone! please don't kill Bambi's family members!" But it's good meat. Thanks for the reminder of the clawfoot tubs, Nannie had one, I loved taking baths in that big ol' tub. She said it was a lot better than the washtubs from her youth!! LOL

Hunting season will soon be in around here as well. I know there is no way I could ever kill anything especially in light of the fact that I don't eat meat!!

Awwww I could not shoot a deer either. :( My grandma cooked on wood stove for years. Grandmother sounds like wonderful lady and cook. Blessings, Janie

The cutest grandbaby's dad is hunting Bambi as we speak (write). They put a feeder out and then night cameras to take pictures of the deer and all they got was raccoons swinging from the deer feeder gobbling corn, and some turkeys. If they fed that much corn to a cow they would have a wooly mammoth by now.

I guess I must be a conservationist at heart. I used to go hunting every year. I climbed the tree, got my book out, got my food out and never killed a deer. I sure ate good. In NC we have what is called public lands, anyone with a license could hunt. I hear there are no public lands in TExas. If one hunts they rent or have permission of a land owner. Do you know, is that true?
Thanks for the info about the wild hogs, I have always wondered that also.Good entry

I miss my grandmother's yeast bread, actually I miss the smell of the yeast as the bread is baking. Although, I miss the bread, too. Bambi visited Sheba and me right outside my house this morning. What a sight!!! Sheba was too intent on chasing a rabbit and missed the whole view. What a dog!

What a great entry. Wonderful memories. I loved living out in the country with all the wild life and miss it terribly. Just couldn't take care of the house alone anymore. BTW, thanks for pimping my tag GF.
Hugs, Joyce

Hi Paula. I gave my daughter a good background story (lecture) the other day on how we lived out here when I was growing up. She wants to drink champagne on a beer drinker's salary (just an expression). It ain't working for her. Anyway, if your grandma had a bathroom like that back then I would have thought she was absolutely RICH. No # 3's for us for years:)......

It sounds like a person could make a pretty good profit charging to hunt. *M*
