Bucket Mama

Remember the calf John had to feed with the bucket with a nipple on it? You can't see the nipple because the calf has the whole thing in its mouth. See how its tail is over to one side? That is because it is wagging it's tail. When a calf is getting milk they wag their tail. John went to the cattle auction Tuesday with the intention of buying ten cows. He came home trailer empty because he didn't like the price. Yesterday when it was so cold he was glad he didn't buy anymore. The counties are starting to have burn bans again because of the severe dryness. That won't make the New Year's Eve fire cracker poppin', roman candle shooting party goers happy. John is talking burning pear again. That is burning the stickers off prickly pear so the cattle have something green to eat. Some people are saying the drought is worse then the 50's but you know how the naysayers like to talk. Anyway lack of rain is the main subject everywhere you go in this county.

I wish you have some of our rain. Some areas
are flooding. That calf is so cute drinking
its milk. Ten cows WOW that a lot.

Well we have had 2 days of torrential rain with a flood warning - feast or famine it seems. Sorry you guys are having such a drought.

Aww, how cute. Years ago I had a couple that I bottle-fed. I really enjoyed it. They are adorable at that stage.

That calf is so cute! Once in a while our dairy will bring a calf up front for everyone to see and pet.
No rain here either, but that is the norm for us. As a child I could remember burning leaves every fall.

One happy calf. Looks like Shorthorn. For the most part these are such gentle creatures. Bottle feeding one of these turns them into a near pet. Name it and it becomes a herd leader when called or sometimes coaxed with a hand full of luscious hay or corn. Halter break that critter and the job's complete. All this provided I'm talking heifer?
Sold steer other day I remembered a cute little feller 14 months ago. Tipping scales at a grown up 1770 pounds. Not to much fat on him he'll make some choice eating for somebody.

Hey, Just back fromthe sea. Our first cruise (civilian). Ships are much more fun if youhave a girl along! HA! Great entries. Reaning what i missed, I was hit by the Dress code a couple entries back. I was worried about that on the cruise so I took a suit. I was the only one at our table with a suit. The ladies of course were dressed, There was everything from jeans to Tux's for dinner.
Anyway as usual, the blog is very good and entertaining. I love the black bull also, and I haven't met him!
Be back. Jack

Hi Paula, I'm just stopping in to read up on your entries for this week. The weather here has been totally crazy too - 85 in the afternoon, 30 in the morning. We did get lucky and had one day with pretty good amounts of rain this week. I doubt it was enough to help the overall conditions but it least it was enough to water my plants (one less thing for me to worry about this week!).
Have a great weekend! :-)

What a cute calf. It reminds me of the movie "City Slickers".

Doesn't seem like it takes long for a drought to develop and affect the country. Seems like all farmers and ranchers are waiting for rain, wanting rain, talking about rain. I could tense up at the very thought, oh what will we do if it does not rain? A country refrain, and somehow or another another miracle rain comes along. We have had blessed rain all day, and we rarely have rain that goes all day, so I know the ground here has gotten a good soaking. Gerry

No lack of rain here, thats for sure. We have had so much parts of Georgia are no longer in a drought or their area is now just a mild case. I was looking at those buckets the other day at Tractor Supply, thought it was a neat idea instead of the bottles.
