An Enjoyable Night

The Historical Society from my hometown always sends me a notice of when their meeting is going to be held. They have done this for several years since they envited me to display my scrapbooks at some event they were having. I started a scrap book in the 50's when I was a teenager. A picture of our neighbor's future wife came out in the Flying Times, a small paper from Kelly Field. She worked there and was a beautiful young lady from our town. I cut the picture out. How can you thow something like that away but what do you do with it? I saved it and saved more and more articles and pictures until the box was getting full so I bought a book. Everything from my hometown. The good, the bad, and the ugly. One day my book was full so I bought another. I got married and moved to San Antonio. Had two daughters and more articles about people I had met, more pictures etc. Finally the second book was full so I bought another. Mel died and I moved here. Then I collected about people I know here. I've been lax, I'm about ready for a fourth book. Anyway we enjoyed the meeting tonight. A man from my school has painted pictures all around south texas of old homes, churches, schools etc. He brought them and showed each one and told a little about each building. Some of the places John and I were very familiar with. One picture is of a house we pass going to the ranch and I wrote a poem about several years ago and had posted it in my AOL journal. The old house has been vacant for years but a flower blooms in front each year with no loving care at all. So I named my poem And The Flower Lives On. I used my imagination of who lived there and what they did. It was so exciting to see that someone else had found the old house interesting enough to paint a picture of.

I would love to see those scrap books! You where scrap booking before it was such a big fad, unless it was big in the 50's I do not know. Hope your day is great!

I think it's really neat that you saved all that stuff throughout your lifetime. I bet that means a lot to you now.

Houses do have character. My spirit house is always my grandmother's ranch house in Boulder, so that house has achieved an important status in my dreams. My grandmother's character made it so with her cultivation of many flowers and a bounteous garden and always the first tomatoes to bear in the valley. The shade trees, the tiger lilies, and the grape arbor. A single flower living on when the old house has all but tumbled down and is not having tender care any more. But a flower reminds us that one who loved flowers once might have lived there. I would like to read your poem again. Gerry

What a wonderful thing to do, keeping all those scrapbooks. Just think how much more history would be known if everyone did that. I wish some of my ancesters had kept diaries, that would be so interesting to me. Take care, Sheila

i would love to see those scrapbooks as well. i can't scrapbook successfully, for i am so concerned about positioning everything properly and using the prettiest accessories to adorn the thing, instead of just sticking them in the book in some reasonable order and enjoying them later.

i love the new pic at the top. i truly love your pictures of the countryside.

Love the entry. folks make history who can continue on the scrap book thing. It is great you saved so may things. We moved so much we have lost a lot of history.
Great entry as usual.

It'd been nice if your poem could have been put together for the both of you. The copied so each of you have the whole of the story for each of you the other. (this suggestion made sense in my head.)

Some years ago I found the local nespaper morgues the basement of our home tow. I had a ball reading them making copies of those articles what included my family members. They're around here somewhere. I've always wanted to put them all together with my family history to including the stories and many individual tales, news clippings, vital statistics and pictures I've collected.
I think I could use a ghost writer. Anybody got Casper's address?

What fun it would be to sit down with all those books, cup of tea (or a glass of wine) in hand, and reminesce (spelling?). Fun entry to read.
