A Fun Trek On New Years Day

John got an urgent call for dominoes this afternoon so I called my little hispanic friend who is from the same little berg I'm from to ask if she wanted to plunder in some old country cemetaries. Do skunks put off a terrible odor when disturbed? Of course she wanted to ride with me. She is about eight years older then me and remembers some things a little different then me. It was a little cold and a little cloudy but as the afternoon progressed it got warmer and turned out to be a nice day. I let her make the choice as she doesn't drive and can't go at will. She choose the two cemetaries where her parents are buried. I didn't ask why her mother and daddy weren't buried at the same cemetary. I didn't know before today that her mother had died when she was 2 years old. That is sad. We went down a long sandy narrow road and turned left across a cattle guard. I'm sure we were on private property but that is the way these country cemetaries are in south texas. You are allowed to go to the cemetary because they have ended up being public after marriages into different families. When we drove up there was another car there. Now I'm telling you we are in the boonies. Nothing but sand and trees and tombstones. When we got out of the truck we noticed two men sitting near a grave. They wished us a Happy New Year and we returned the greeting. I would have felt a little apprehensive except for the fact they were sitting by a grave. I'm presuming they were father and son visiting wife and mother. I think they were real gentlemen as they left shortly. She pointed out all her relatives and we read tombstones and looked at pictures and read the historical marker. We started hearing shots and they seemed to be getting nearer and nearer. It was deer country but they couldn't be shooting that many deer so we decided it was time for us to leave. If they missed their target one or both of us could be history. We went on to the Anchorage cemetary where all my relatives are and I pointed out where all of mine are as she knew a lot of them. We still had one more to make where her Mom is. This was the most interesting part of the trek to me because she showed me a cemetary very near Anchorage that I didn't know existed. What? A country road I had not be down? It was on a farm with large bales of hay all around. The cemetary is fairly large but they are doing their planning more neatly then most. All the graves are in one corner. Kind of unusual to me that there are so many hispanics in our area with the name Brown and that is the name of the cemetary but the tombstones had primarily hispanic names that are familiar to me as hispanic. Then I noticed something else unusual in these old cemetaries. By one fence was a water faucet with a long garden hose. I pointed it out to her and she didn't know it was there. I'm wondering if someone dug a well just for this cemetary. humm? She suggested we stop for something to drink after all this walking. The first place we passed was a dance hall/ beer joint type place. Is this where you want to stop Lydia I ask? We had a good laugh about that. We decided someone may ask us to dance and we may forget to go home. On down the road we met about twenty motorcycles with the black leather and we figured they were heading to the dance hall so we opted for Dairy Queen in the next town. That will teach John to play dominoes on New Year's day. We had fun.

Fernan and Frieda gotta say Happy New Year.
We've found cemeteries great places to share our picnic with family and friends. Interestingly enough sitting among the stones I remember them and tell stories of old. Our children liked this.
We're glad you can get out and drive about. Frieda quit some tears back and don't feel comfortable behind the wheel as I used to.

Yeah you are wierd. Graveyards are for dead folks. LOL There are a couple of graveyards I want to find in Georgia. I went there as a very little kid when we buried my parent's parents. I think I know the small town but I am not sure. It must be interesting where you can know some folks there. A lot ot times in the mountains I just like to read the different names and the dates, especially the old ones. "My Grand kids have promised on my tombstone it will read "Here Lies Jack In a Box"

I always enjoy making a trip to the cemetaries either in my hometown or the one next to it as relatives are buried in both and my Aunt Nethella and another old codger managed to get the green grass growing on that one before she died, so she could have grass growing over her. They both had the best flower gardens in town and just could not stand the thought of nothing but the tumbleweeds blowing through their resting ground. That was strange that your friend's mom and dad were buried in different cemetaries, but then I presumed the deaths were far apart. I must say, Paula, your companion John is the luckiest man on earth to have a woman to go with him as willing and interested as you are. I think that is the way women ought to act, though, as it is bound to be more interesting. Gerry

This sounds like a great time, I know visiting cemetaries shouldn't be but it does. It would have been funny had you opted for the dance hall instead of DQ...you might not have made it home ~ on time anyway. ;)

Sounds like y'all had a good day out and about looking at all that past history. I would opt for the DQ also..lol. Kelly

We used to get together and trek around to old half-hidden family cemeteries and grave sites. When I first read you were going "plundering" in old cemeteries I was a bit worried! lol
