Shocking Pink Nails & Hawaii Prints

As we sat down to lunch there was a knock at the door. It was Lucy another of John's renters. We invited her in to eat with us and she accepted. Lucy is a divorced single mom who lives in the next town in a run down trailer house. John lets her have it dirt cheap and she asks for nothing. If she is late John says nothing. He has toyed with the idea of giving it to her but has let things ride the way they are fearing her kids may talk her in to selling it and then she will not have a place to live.Or they may all move in, so we all just skim along and enjoy chatting when we have the chance. Lucy is hispanic and speaks good English but she speaks very fast. I have to pay very close attention to follow her and sometime John gets completely lost. During lunch the subject of death came up. Lucy told us when she dies she does not want people to be sad or wear black. She said she wants her toe nails painted shocking pink and she wants people to wear bright colors to her funeral, maybe something like hawaiian prints. She said that is me. I want nothing to be false. Lucy told of a friend who died recently. She said the funeral wasn't him at all. He probably had never worn a suit and tie in his life but there he was all doodied up. She said he wouldn't have liked that but he would have liked that she put a pack of cigarettes in his casket and told him to smoke one for her. Lucy told us of the new leaf she is turning over to try to lose weight and stop smoking but when she dies to let her be herself. We love Lucy.

I think I like Lucy too. Our renters are sorta the same: They pay $275 a month and Cliff told them he won't raise the rent as long as they fix anything that goes wrong themselves. They've been here for 9 years, and I don't foresee them going anywhere soon.

I would love to meet Lucy. What a nice lady who has learned to be at peace with herself and to be genuine... a valuable lesson in life. I wouldn't mind having shocking pink toenails and espadrilles on and a sexy sundress if I must be buried... but I do not intend to die and hope to be raptured outta here LOL.

PS I think that is AWESOME that you are letting her rent that home for a low price. You are good people and God has blessed you so that you can help someone else in need!! Hope you are having a great 2009 so far. I am behind in my journaling but trying to catch up as I can.

I AGREE WITH LUCY. WE BURIED MY FATHER-IN-LAW WITH A PLAID FLANNEL SHIRT AND HIS BIG WIDE SUSPENDERS ON. WE GOT A FEW COMMENTS (AHEM) FROM HIS STUCK UP SISTER---BUT MOST OF THE FAMILY AGREED THAT PA WOULD HAVE TURNED OVER IN THE GAVE IF HE HAD HAD A SUIT AND TIE ON!!!BARB

Lucy sounds great and like she knows who she is and what she wants. I know alot of people who feel the way she does about their deaths ~ Doug doesn't want me to have a somber viewing or funeral either.

Hispanic people don't seem as "scared" over death as Americans, generally speaking. I've grew up around plenty of Latinos not to mention my boyfriend is Mexican lol.

He doesn't fear death a bit and talks about it as if it'll be just another day in his life.. I suppose it is but I'm not quite as perky about it, lol.

Lucy sounds like a very sweet lady! Also John for being as kind as he is should be blessed!

Lucy sounds like a genuine person to be around. I like people like that, people that are one hundred percent themselves. I think its great that John lets her stay there for little to nothing. It is good that he doesnt give it to her, if the kids might have a hand in trying to sell it, which would just not be good at all. She is where it is affordable and comfortable for her, and the kids shouldnt bother that. Hugs, kelly

What a poignant spirit and soul. I agree why the pretense in death, we should be as we were in life. (Hugs)Indigo

I think it is wonderful what you are doing for
Lucy. She sounds like a nice person. Letting
her live there is perfect. Your thoughts are
right on target about children getting involved.. I have seen it to many times when children get involved they can leave their parents with nothing. I know 2 cases right now.

Lucy sounds like a nice lady. Good idea to just hold on to the trailor so she will have a place to live. My uncle always wore overalls and he was burried in a suit. Didn't seem much like him. Another uncle died and he was burried in a new pair of overalls. Helen

Sounds good to me, be yourself, of course I will be put out if Shirl shows up with pink fingernails. hahahah!
Probably not a good idea to give the place to Lucy, I have found out the hard way somefolks must RENT, they cannot own. Taxes and maintenance is not understood by many folks.
Good entry.

Lucy sounds like my kind of gal. I have told my children that when I go I just want them to do whatever makes them comfortable because I will not be in this old body anymore.
