All Done Until Next Time

Cowboy with horse was on time. Everything went smoothly except one calf didn't like John bossing her around so she kicked him hard. Broke the skin a little and looks like there is going to be a bruise. Crazy cow was sent to the auction along with about six others. Two has bad bags (udders) so they can't raise babies. I guess the others are getting too old. Shelly Marie's calf was sold. It is getting big and still nursing. John said Shelly needs a rest. You didn't sell her did you I ask? She is still there but I know one of these days it's coming. I understand if you start keeping cows as pets you will soon be out of business. They got all the young calves their shots. As for the questions about blackleg. I'll tell you what I know and that isn't much. It is something that is in the ground and when the young calves eat grass that has been growing in it, it makes them very sick and is a sure death sentence but the shots will take care of it. The original owner told John when he leased the place that the disease is present on that place and to be sure to always vacinate his young calves so he always does and then there is no problem. It isn't contagious to other cows just something the young pick up in the digestive system. Why they call it blackleg is beyond me. John didn't seem to know either.

Good entry. Interesting as always, I guess you are a Cowgirl, just don't get close to the kicking calves. LOL It is fun to learn a little as time goes on.

I've never heard about "black leg" around here but I'm sure others who have cattle know about it. Sorry about John getting kicked :)......

Interesting about black leg, I was thinking it was something else so now I learned something new today.

I am so happy to hear Shelly Marie is still there. We have a watusi called Crazy Cow, she earned her name, believe me.

Too bad John was kicked so hard, I hope he is okay and doesn't have any bad effects from it.

I think John should keep Shelly. One cow is not going to break him...she is your cow and you are attached to her. I been kicked, but by a horse, hurts bad, and leaves a welp and a bruise to show for it. Owch...Kelly

I hope he never sells Shelley Marie. You should get to keep at least one cow as a pet, you know, and we've all grown fond of Shelley Marie.
