More Yucca

This is how the yucca grows at the ranch with no care whatsoever so no Ora I don't think my plant needs pruning. I did have a man trim the bottom leaves with a saw on a long pole so It isn't as dangerous and I trim the points off from time to time so the man who mows my yard doesn't poke his eye out. J. as for eating the leaves I have never heard of it but it could be. The hispanic people here in our county eat the prickly pear. They harvest it in the spring when the leaves are young and tender and no thorns yet. I think they cook it kind of like squash and some add it to scrambled eggs. I tasted it one time and didn't like it but I'm thinking it is something you have to aqquire a taste for and the hispanic population have grown up eating it so they like it very much. We were just given a jar of jelly made from either jalapeno pepper or chile petine (sp) not sure which. They told me to soften some cream cheese and add some of the jelly and mix and use for a dip. It is really good.

I think I will stick with collards. LOL Always interesting, Paula. Also the dip does sound good, I usually steer away from jalapeno, except for a little on a salad. OH yeah and the Armidillo eggs we had the other day. LOL

Thanks for posting the picture it sure is an interesting plant, but not one I think I would want to eat. The jelly sounds good though I love spicy/hot stuff. Have a wonderful day!

Its actually not the leaf I originally thought it was the root. My mom doesn’t cook it though she simply cuts it up and serves it cold. She adds hot sauce and lemon to it and it tastes great.

Pretty plant Paula.
Been thinking again. Watch out. Seems to me lawn equipment ought to come with a new bar big enough to house it. As everything new is harder and harder to fit in the same old yard barn.

I am not too smart. I put a comment on my blog to answer your question. ha! The books are Mostly stored in our big basement compartments. Space left from the out board motor, elec motor, life jackets etc. Which I no longer carry. Thanks for asking.

well I guess the "pruning" idea is a Yankee thought...if something doesn't grow or doesn't do well...chop it back...LOL...seems to work on most things...but we have killed a few plants too LOL...oh but another trip to the nursery for something new is such fun...LOL...and it doesn't sound like something I would want to eat...LOL..God Bless ... hugs...Ora

I have a Yucca plant here in PA but I don't think it grows nearly as big as the ones you have.

I'm mostly known as 'MA' said...

Those Yucca plants grow in Ohio too, but I've never seen one that size before. They are beautiful to look at but I don't think I want to eat one. Thanks for visiting my journal today and leaving a comment. I hope you'll be back to visit again.

Yucca's are the hardiest plants I've ever seen! I have several of them and they survive and thrive no matter what conditions we are going through.
Hope all is well in your world Paula. I miss coming by on a regular basis.
Hugs!

I am glad you explained they eat the prickly pear when it is young AND NOT PRICKLY because I have heard that before, also served with eggs and I always wondered...... Now I feel stupid :-). I pictured very tough tongues.

I have heard of eating yucca, but never tried it myself. My hispanic friends were in the neighborhood today and do you know she cooked some tamales and I guess what you would call elephant ears for me and dropped it off? I couldnt resist the cinnamon and sugar treats, but we will have the tamales for supper tonight. :) Kelly
