Off To The Ranch Again Jiggity Jig

Our plan was to look for a young cow who was due to have her calf. After all the stirring up working cattle yesterday he figured she may have had it. We found her quickly but no calf with her. She seemed to have been nursed so off we go looking around. Those cows are able to hide their baby where searching eyes cannot find them. We couldn't drive in the high dry grass because it would be easy to run over it with the truck and not see it. Especially since we have no idea what color it may be. The cow was with calf when John bought it so he has no idea of the type bull that impregnated the cow. Cows can be really smart when they don't want people messing with their little one. We weren't going to bother it, we just wanted to know it was okay and alive but she didn't know that. She was in the middle of the field with her girl friend. Did you know sometime two cows will hang together away from the herd just like girlfriends? The cow kept looking one direction like she was looking at her calf but John is on to cows tricks after all these years. He figured the calf was in the oppsite direction in which she was looking so he walked for a while but didn't find it. He had told me to stay in the truck because if he got near the calf the mama may go after him. Some cows will and some don't care if you look or even try to pet them. This is a new cow so he doesn't know her personality. We never did find it so we left, didn't want to get her too upset. She will probably bring it up with the herd in a few days.

Hi Paula,
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I hope you start getting the rain you need. My brother that lives in San Antone talked about how dry it has been there. Hope you see the new calf soon, take care, Sheila

Funny how different jobs have their own kwirks that one learns, don't know exactly when or how, but somehow those things are accepted as normal. I enjoy hearing about other occupations and the tricks of the trade that aare learned over the years. I guess patience is one of the things you guys must have. Gotta know when to quit looking.
Reminds me of a song: Gotta know when to hold 'em gotta know...........

I do hope that you find all the calves. One of our owners of our dairy will bring the calfs up so the children can pet it. It is kinda cool since we don't have farms around here.

Hi Paula,

I never knew cow's where so smart when hiding their young. Then again I do not know any cows personally like you do. It's very interesting how they can have a cow friend and hang out together. I sure hope the little one is fine.
Have a good day!

I am learning so much I didn't know they would
hide their baby. She wants to have a big come
out showing. I hope the baby is OK. We could
have a baby shower for it if she will bring it out of hiding.

Paula thanks for your comments on my Journal.

I think cows are a lot smarter than people realize. Same with chickens...but you know how I feel about chickens. ;) I hope the baby is okay, let us know when you see the new arrival.

Hi Paula. I'm sure the calf will show up when mamma feels comfortable with her surroundings. Have a great week-end :).....

I am catching up on all of your entries so I know the baby is there!! Our buffalo buddy up with a girlfriend too. We have two cows who are inseparable, they have always been best friends and rarely hang out with anyone else. Animals are amazing and it's so great you take the time to watch them the way you do.

LOL Mom and I would help my dad get the new calves in. Old mamma cow can get pretty up set. I remember my dad carrying one calf and that old cow was bawlin' and throwing a fit. lol Hope things are better with you being sick by now. I have a floater in both eyes so computer kind of bothers my eyes. :( Maybe from not enough sleep... I hope that is what it is from. Blessings, Janie
