Any Thing For A Good Friend

We went to Poth this morning to get cow tubs. Boy does that place sell the feed in this dry weather. The parking lot was full of every kind of truck and trailer you can imagine. There were even soccor mom vehicles waiting for dog food or feed for their kids show animals. They all get their feed and then stand outside visiting by the side of their trucks. We had to drive very slow home as we had 1000 pounds of feed on that lil' Ford Ranger. After we unloaded it with the cows trying to nose in, no manners at all, John starts counting his cows again. As we started down the lane toward the stock tank I see four little legs on each side of a cow and then I can make out they are both nursing. Twins? When we got closer we could see it was the girlfriend cow and she was letting her friends calf nurse too. I couldn't believe my eyes. What friends, but where is the other mama? They are always together. John says something is wrong. He starts to spectulate. She may be rattlesnake bitten, she may have been shot, she may have bloated herself on pear (cactus). Sometime in dry weather they will start eating the dry pear and they like it so well with no green grass they will just stand there until they eat too much. They can bloat and die. We looked around the house, pens, hay and no mama cow. We start driving up and down fences, here and there. We stopped and John walked the dry creek bed one way and then another. No mama cow. I insist we go to the back 40. I just know that is where she is because that is where she had her baby and kept it. We went all around it, no mama cow. We were ready to head for home so we drove back to the pens. There is mama cow with her baby just looking at us as if to say whats wrong with you two? The joke was on us but we do know her friend stood by her while she took a nap or whatever she was doing. On the way home we came upon a trailer that had spilled their load of hay on the highway but they already had a frontend loader picking it up so we didn't need to stop to help. We had been seeing smoke at a distance in the direction of John's daughter's house so we headed that way to check it out. It was farther in distance then John estimated so we went home. We could tell by the smoke they were putting it out. There are signs on all the roads of grass fires these days. Bless all the firemen.

I didn't realize they could bloat & die from that but reading you I have learned I know almost NOTHING but what you tell me about cows.
You seem to have a great loyalty to them & not just as a ~we are being compensated monetarily for this~ sort of feeling. ~Mary

Good cow entry. I agree with Mary, we are enjoying the Texas Education. It is neat that one cow gives a meal to the visiting kid.

Don't start with the A/C stuff! LOL

Hm, well cows aren't usually so accomodating, but we did have sister cats and the smart one tried to take her sister's kittens away from her and would let them nurse as she obviously didn't think she was smart enough to take care of them! She would move them, and sister cat would go move them back, although patiently. As for Mama cat, she just left home and the whole mess.

Glad it turned out the Mama cow was okay. I saw on the internet that San Antonio temps were supposed to be around 88 degrees. I don't remember it being that warm in early March when I was there. Take care, Sheila

I have learned so much about cows. Well the
cow acted just like we did when we were kids
always inviting some one over to eat. Glad you
