My Country Road Fix

After supper it was easy to convince John to go for a country ride since it was on my gas and truck. We found a nice road south of town I had not been on and a long time since John had. Right off the bat just outside of town a fox crossed in front of us. He/she sure looked thin but was moving fast and disappeared into the brush. We saw lots of stock tanks that have gone dry. This is mostly ranch country and we saw two ranches with names on the gate of people that we are familiar with. One is a man who owns a restaurant here in town and has it all decorated in country. One is a man whom I remember as a baby when his sister danced ballet with my girls. We didn't even know the two had ranches out that way. One of the gates had his name in large gold letters. Wow must be nice to be a monied person. Maybe I should say it must be nice to be lucky. I think they both inherited. I'm not jealous, I'm just popping off. Good for them. Some of the roads we traveled on were gravel but good and some had a little pavement on but all in all we didn't fall in any holes. On the way home we veered by Juan's to pay him for some hay and ask if he knew anyone who would spray mesquite. He said maybe two guys out there would but he isn't sure and they would only work half days and couldn't start for a couple of weeks. Doesn't sound promising. No one wants that hot job right out in three digit temps with boiling sun. While I was waiting in the truck I saw one of the little men taking water to an animal or to water something planted. He was carrying water in a pitcher. Surely there was a bucket around somewhere but I didn't figure he needed my advice. After we left there on the dark dirt country road we caught a bunch of deer in the head lights. They were on their way to eat leaves off the peanut plants. Two jumped the fence and three went between the wires. The ones that jumped were probably bucks. They do that so as not to get their horns caught so John tells me. They are so graceful when they jump. It looks as if they pause in mid air as they go over. When we got to the edge of town I spotted a tree limb that had fallen in our lane just in time to warn John. He came just a few feet from hitting it. As soon as we got home he called the sheriff's department so they can take care of it before someone hits it. It was really a nice ride and I saw another road out that way we can explore.
