What Color Is Turtle Blood?

Well I'm just asking 'cause I don't know. The first time one of the turtles raised its head out of the water near where I was standing on the ground I could see a red stripe above it's eye. I thought it was blood and had been hurt. Now I know they all have that or most of them anyway. We went out late to feed them. Would you believe when I walked close to the water one popped up and before I knew it I was counting six and then they invited their relatives. I couldn't count them because some was imerged in the water and some was bitting at the feed (stale bread and puppy food). Before I could say "jack robinson" they were coming toward my feet. Chills went up and down my spine. I'm remembering hearing about SNAPPING TURTLES. I stomped my feet and they dove to the water but they kept coming back out unless they ran across a piece of bread or puppy food then they would lap it up. My throwing arm is getting better. They don't seem to have any side vision. I have to throw food directly in front of them for them to see it. Wouldn't you know I didn't take my camera? They were so close but as I said they are not a pretty color and kind of blend in with everything. John got bored with that in a hurry and said he was going to check the cows did I want to go? Now why would he pose a question like that? How can I be two places at once? I went with him being afraid I would miss something. The turtles had been fed, I don't want them to get so fat they can't swim. We went down the lane toward the pasture. John stopped Ole Blue (the truck) and I stood by it enjoying a breeze we haven't had in forever while John crawled the fence to check on some cows. Three bull calves came barreling through a gate and put on their brakes when they the truck. The truck is a '93 but it is still shiny and those calves couldn't figure out what had overtaken their territory. One of them walked up close to take a better look and saw me then they ran for their life.

If any one finds out what color the turtle blood is, please put it on your blog. I can picture a story in the local Texas paper saying a woman ad been stampeded by a herd of turtles.

If they are small I doubt they are snapping turtles. I'm no expert on turtles but the snappers around here are huge - like they can't fit in a 55 gallon drum!! They may be red ear sliders you are seeing. My turtle is a yellow bellied slider. I always think my turtle will too fat for his shell. LOL.
I think their blood is purple. That is my favorite color so it sounds nice.

Ok, I am kidding you, I don't know but I would guess it's red.

I hope we don't see a news item about a nice lady overtaken by a sea of turtles...and lets hope they don't follow you home one day...ha. I wonder how they would like John's pickle juice...Have a great day, Sheila

I have no idea what color their blood is. I think it is cool the way you go down there and feed them, and now they all know you! LOL

What are you trying to say Paula? When they saw you they ran away fast! What does that mean?

Does it mean they don't like you as much as the snapping turtles?

Always enjoy your days account! (Don't give them any of John's pickle juice, Sheila is trying to get you in a mess, they would really attack!!!)

I think their blood is red like the most of us. Then you have the Blue Bloods who don't talk to the rest of us. LOL

PAULA, SOME SNAPPING TURTLES CAN BE VICIOUS.
THE AREA JUST NORTH OF TULSA, BACK DURING THE 1930s HAD SEVERAL SHALLOW PONDS AND THERE WERE SO MANY OF THE MEAN SPIRITED SNAPPERS THEY WERE OFTEN MASHED ON THE HIGHWAY BY THE TRAFFIC.

THE LARGEST WERE ABOUT A FOOT IN DIAMETER AND THEY COULD STRETCH OUT THEIR NECK SEVERAL INCHES WHEN SNAPPING AT STICKS HELD NEAR THEM.

I NEVER SAW ANOTHER AREA WITH SO MANY AND DOUBT IF IN THIS PRESENT DAY THERE ARE ANY THERE BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE KILLED THEM ALL OFF, FEARING FOR CHILD SAFETY. ONE COULD HAVE SNAPPED OFF A CHILDS FINGER AS EASILY AS THEY DID STICKS.

PAULA HAVE YOU SEEN ANY LARGER ONES ? PLEASE DON'T TAKE A CHANCE OF ONE GETTING HOLD OF YOU.

I don’t know what color turtle blood is but I know that the red stripe you are referring to is the distinguishing characteristic of what is called a “red ear turtle.” I happen to love turtles so the scene that you described here is amazing to me!

Be careful with the turtles! We once had one we named "killer". He was friendly as long as you were feeding him, but if you visited him with no food, he would literally try to snap off your fingers!LOL

I can see headlines in paper: LOCAL LADY
ATTACK BY A GANG OF TURTLES AFTER FREE FOOD.
Needs to know what is the color of their blood.

Many years ago we caught a snapping turtle while fishing in a small river in WI, so we butchered it to eat, and I thought that it had red blood. it tasted good, like chicken, etc. Don't let them bite you because they do NOT let go ever after they are dead!

It sure sounds like so much fun living on your ranch. All the great animals you get to interact with all the time. I sure hope it starts finally cooling off for you all in TX.
