Millions

No not dollars but if wild onions were money I could be rich. Since we got the nice rains these tiny white flowers with skinny stems are everywhere. John thinks they are called wild onions. I ask him if they have an onion or bulb in the ground and he said he doesn't think so. I tried to pull several up and they just broke off so I still don't know They are everywhere and just seem to come up over night. They are in yards, fields, bar ditches, and vacant lots. I ask John if people can eat them and he said he thinks they are too bitter.

We went to John's daughter's house this afternoon to help her look for a heifer that had disappeared from a pen in front of her house. She had lost a calf and the vet told her to keep it away from the bull so she put her alone in this pen so they could feed and keep an eye on her. We looked everywhere up and down the roads and into people's places. She even called the Sheriff to report her possibly stolen. When we got home she called to say she had found the heifer with two large calves in another area of her place. Guess she got lonely and wanted some company.

A friend called me tonight to tell me a lady we both know had been bitten by a baby rattlesnake. She was doing yard work and moved a stepping stone and the snake was under it. It bit her twice and she is not doing well at all.

The turtles got a fast feed on the way home today. I had taken a big old biscuit. Only about six compared to twenty came to eat. I hadn't been out in a few days because of the muddy dam. The wind was blowing the water and making it ripple. Not sure they liked that or it was a different time of day so they weren't expecting me. I yelled turtle soup because I don't know how I am supposed to call turtles. Maybe that was the wrong thing to yell. Come and get it or we'll throw it to the dogs, maybe?

Oh, don't mention wild onions to me! Back when I milked several cows, at certain times of the year the wild onions grew like crazy. And my cows LOVED wild onions.

That would have been fine with me, but when they ate the wild onions, their milk tasted and smelled like wild onions.

Yuck.

I'm very worried about the lady bitten by the rattlesnake!! Please keep us posted on her recovery and I will say prayers. I always wonder about wild onions too when I run into them. We have them here in Kentucky. I think we may have had some chives too.

No gravy? I'm think biscuits & gravy for the turtles ;-)with some wild onion in the gravy. Seriously, I'm sure the turtles appreciate the extra food, no matter what it is or how often.
Uhm, yelling: Turtle Soup might scare them.
If I yelled: Cat Soup to call Briege, she'd be pissed.

I hope the woman bitten by the snake gets well. I wouldn't have thought a baby snake could do so much harm - yikes! I don't think turtle soup is the right thing to say LOL.. So glad the calf was found safe & sound.

PAULA, THIS FROM AN OKIE OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION YEARS. WILD ONIONS ARE VERY PROLIFIC.
DURING THE DUST STORM DAYS THE WILD ONIONS SPREAD WITH THE DUST TO MANY STATES BACK AND FORTH.
AS OTHER COMMENTS STATED, COWS LOVE WILD ONIONS AND THE FLAVOR GOES INTO THE MILK.
THE CHEROKEE INDIANS AT TIMES HELD GATHERINGS AND ONE OF THE FOODS WAS FRIED WILD ONIONS, SOMETIMES WITH FRIED POTATOS AND A COUPLE EGGS THROWN IN. I LIKED THAT FOOD.

I HAVE READ THAT BABY RATTLESNAKE VENOM IS AS POISONIOUS AS THE MATURE SNAKE VENOM, JUST NOT AS MUCH IN THE BITE.
WHEN A CHILD MY OLDER SISTER WAS BITTEN ON THE FOOT BY A RATTLESNAKE ALONG A PATH WHILE COWS WERE BEING DRIVEN HOME.
A COW HAD STEPPED ON THE SNAKE CRIPPLING IT. DAD SLIT THE WOUND AND SUCKED THE POISON OUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THOUGH EVERY BEAT OF THE HEART PUMPS THE POISON THROUGH THE BODY. SISTER SURVIVED AND WAS VERY SICK.

I WAS STUNG SEVERAL TIMES BY SCORPIONS AND BEES AND HORNETS OVER THE YEARS AND HAD NO SERIOUS AFTER EFFECTS. sam

When we milked cows and they got wild onions the milk tasted just like wild onion. Ukky Paula when you get a chance go to my regular blog and see our tomato tree. It grew and grew and produced like mad. I do hope the lady that got bit by a snake is doing better.

I hope the lady gets alright that was bit by the snake. I have a cousin that got bit by one when she was small. She almost died. Her leg turned black. The doc said that a baby rattle snake didn't know to save back some venom and gives big shots of it. More than grown snakes do because they save some for later.
I would know how to call turtles up to eat. Helen

If they smell like onions they is onions. Boys who smoke and ain't supposed to eat them before they go home so mama won't smell tobacco on their breath.
Yeah, 'turtle soup' ain't the call sign Paula. LOL
