Halloween At Our Town

I know I've posted this high school auditorium from my town before but I wanted to say some of the high school boys always put a wagon on top of this building on Halloween night. How they got it up there no one ever knew. They would always pick some poor soul wrestle him to the ground, take off his jeans, and run them up the flag pole. Of course there was always the out house in front of the post office. This was about the extent of mischief in our town and they were made to clean it all up the next day. The Superintendent was easy going, liked kids and they liked him. We had never heard of Trick or Treat until the mother of a friend of mine suggested a gang of us girls go and she went with us. We were a little leery of this but the mother wanted us to go and she wanted to take us. She was from another state and I guess this was something she was used to kids doing. The owners and their wives of our hardware store had houses that adjoined with a porch so that was where we decided to go. They were as surprised as we were and it was unexpected so all they had to give us was apple cider. Halloween has certainly changed here and probably everywhere else. In days past it was unheard of to see yards decorated. Today it runs a close race with Christmas for decorations and parties.

Halloween is the only time of year we send our kids out begging for candy off of total strangers that we would not do other wise any other time of year

I had never hear of trick or treaters until after I married. Some came to our house making loud rackets banging pots and pans after we had went to bed. We never went to the door LOL. Helen

That is funny Paula because on the farm my brothers and neighboring farm always picked one poor farmer and took a hay rack apart and carried it up to the barn and put it back together on the roof., of the barn or Machine shed and I do't know how many outhouses were knocked over. Believe me they always had to go back and undo the damage.

We didn't have much money when I was a kid so Halloween night was as much a work night as a fun night. We worked every house for blocks and blocks gathering candy as a squirrel would gather nuts for winter.

Happy Halloween, These armadillos are putting holes all in our yard...front, back and sides, as well as the flower beds. They never bother the yard of the house next door, we must have gourmet worms and bugs...ha.

It's only been in recent years people around here really go all out as far as decorating for halloween.
