Never Judge A Book By It's Cover

That saying is sooo true. A few weeks ago we went to a Historical meeting in my hometown. A man spoke about the oil boom there years ago. He gave out phamplets with info. about that subject. We were surprised to learn that boom went all the way from my hometown to south of the town we live in now. We didn't know it was so extensive. John has a friend who lives in the country near his hometown and John wanted to take this info. to the man. He knew he would enjoy reading it as he is in his 80's now and has had cancer. He was in the oil business and probably already knew all this but would be interesting to refresh his memory. I'm always amazed at this couple as John has told me how wealthy they are. You could never tell by the way they live. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the way they live I'm just saying---. I don't know what I'm saying, I'm just amazed. Their house is very modest, they drive nice vehicles but not what you would think a wealthy person would drive. She is a horder, she saves everything because there is not an ounce of space on her kitchen cabinets. I know she cooks but how she does it I do not know. I'm saying box after box just barely fitting on the cabinets. The same on the refrigerator and freezer. Oh well to each his own, it would drive me crazy to not have any space. The visit was nice. They are so interesting to listen to especially the man. Even though he is in his 80's and as I said had cancer he is still very sharp. He is very opinionated about politics and says so. He has interesting stories to tell about the offers he has had to go in business from people who know they have money. He studies and considers and usually says no thank you. He might be older but he didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday.

Good story. I used to know a family in the little town near where I grew up who were officially "millionaires" but you would have never known it from their house or how they dressed or acted.

Interesting read. I always assume there's something I can learn from everybody. Most people just don't take the time to listen.

Sounds like an interesting couple who never let wealth make a difference to them. Maybe she has money tucked in those boxes somewhere LOL. Helen

PAULA, YOUR ENTRY REMINDS ME OF A NEIGHBOR IN MAYES COUNTY OKLAHOMA DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION. THE NEIGHBOR, W.A. GRAHAM, OWNED A HARDWARE STORE IN PRYOR OKLAHOMA. MR. GRAHAM ENJOYED TALKING WITH CUSTOMERS AND SHARECROPPERS THAT FARMED HIS MANY FARMS ALONG THE NEOSHO RIVER. ONE WOULD NEVER HAVE SUSPECTED BILL TO BE A MULTI MILLIONAIRE BY TALKING WITH HIM AND JOKING WITH OTHERS WEARING 'OVERHALLS'.

MR. GRAHAM HAD INSTRUCTED HIS EMPLOYEES TO EXTEND CREDIT PURCHASES TO CUSTOMERS UP TO A CERTAIN POINT.
MY DAD NEVER BOUGHT ON CREDIT. OUR FRIEND JIM ROLLINS DID AND THIS DAY DAD AND I WERE WITH JIM IN THE STORE AND JIM HAD BROUGHT SOME COWBOY BOOTS TO THE CASHIER TO WRAP UP, AND WAS ASKED, JIM IS THIS A CASH PURCHASE ?
BILL GRAHAM STEPPED OVER AND TOLD JIM THAT HIS CREDIT WAS STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT ALREADY.

NO HARD FEELINGS SAID JIM ROLLINS WITH A SMILE AS HE REACHED IN A POCKET AND PULLED OUT A CHECK BOOK. SHOW ME THE TOTAL OWED AND I WILL WRITE A CHECK FOR IT ALL. FILLED OUT THE CHECK AND SHOOK HANDS ALL AROUND AND TOLD DAD AND I WE ARE READY TO GO HOME.

AS WE GOT TO THE ENTRANCE DOOR TO LEAVE, JIM ROLLINS CALLED TO BILL GRAHAM AND SAID, BILL, HOLD THAT CHECK UNTIL THE FIRST OF NEXT MONTH AND WE HEADED FOR HOME.

PLEASE TAKE TIME TO TYPE IN THE KEYWORD - - - W.A. GRAHAM PRYOR OKLAHOMA TO READ WHAT A GREAT MAN WAS W.A. GRAHAM. LOYAL AMERICAN.

IN HIS WILL GAVE DEEDS TO EVERY FARM THAT HAD BEEN WORKED TO THE SHARECROPPERS.
SO MANY OTHER GIFTS. GREAT FRIEND TO ALL.

I have never really met a really wealthy person. I guess that is what tells you where I come from and where I have remained happily ever since.

It is good to know some rich folks are not pretentious. I have known a couple and have some friends who are wealthy. None try to show money. They are just common folk and everyone of them have earned every penny they have. None was inherited.
I am in a rich person's will, Shirl. Problem is she will out live me or we will be in the same old folks home. hahahahaha!

Well, maybe the lady really doesn't cook much with no space to do it in. The man sounds like my BIL Floyd. He has invested in a lot of businesses and it does not seem to bother him if he loses 50 thou or so. He is just as apt to make it back on the next business he invests in. Guess investing is a natural business for multi-millionaires to fall into. People just naturally come to them. Floyd is still doing investing even though he's nearly 90 and hasn't gone broke yet!
