What Will I Do If Lucy Turns Out To Be A Boy?

Oh I know I can name her Luther. You say how will I know? I've been doing some reading about turtles by a man who is supposed to know. I can't wait to have time to go visit the turtles and check them out more closely. Male turtles are supposed to have longer tails, indented shells, and longer toe nails. Okay the longer tails I can tell. Indented shells, I know what indented means but I have never noticed any shells looking indented. I'll have to pay closer attention. The longer toe nails are supposed to be an advantage to court the female. Doesn't sound good to me but then I'm not a turtle. Now Mr. Jimmy tells me I can't pet a turtle so I'm going to take the challenge. Seems I have my work cut out for me at the stock tank. Probably be a few days before I get to check out the sex of turtles and try to pet one. I think it is supposed to rain and get cold (our coldest spell yet) tomorrow. I'm not serious enough to sit in the mud and freeze to find out these personal things about turtles.

I hope Lucy turns out to be a Lucy. I saw where you all were going to get some cool weather. Enjoy it, Sheila

Does it matter about the gender anyway? Luther is a very cool name.

I think Garnett's idea would be the easiest. After my husband's heart transplant, he said that is how he could tell he got a woman's heart, he had to squat to pee. LOL

Hi Paula...about them turtles....when they say "indented"...they mean the belly or bottom of the shell is indented or concave...like a bowl upside down....a lady turtle is the opposite or flat...as far as we can tell we have one of each...altho the male is the biggest...we just watch each day to see what is going on...and I have petted mine...pick them up and pat them on head or smooth fingers over legs...but not sure about them "pond" turtles LOL...and I am learning alot from your turtle blogging LOL...hugs to ya...Ora

Paula I glimpsed just a portion about Lucy being a male and nearly had a heart attack. You can just name her Luther if she turns out to be a he. I think it is great that you are researching the turtles. I thank you for the BD wishes and I feel like 90 today.

PAULA,
I THINK BABY TURTLES HATCH FROM EGGS. TURTLE EGGS OF COURSE.

DURING MY 'OKIE' YEARS AS A TEENAGER THE TERRAPINS (SMALL LAND TURTLES) WERE COMMON AND AT TIMES WOULD SEE TINY BABY TERRAPINS IN AN AREA USUALLY NEAR A SPRING.

I NEVER GAVE IT MUCH THOUGHT BACK THEN, JUST ACCEPTED IT AS NATURE TAKING IT'S COURSE. THE BABIES WERE TINY, PERHAPS AN INCH AND A HALF IN DIAMETER. THEY DID GROW QUICKLY TO BE LARGER.

WE BOYS SOMETIMES ARRANGED TURTLE RACES, HOPING OUR TURTLE WOULD WIN FIRST PRIZE.

THERE WERE ALSO OKIE LIZARDS AND HORNED TOADS TOO. THOSE HORNED TOADS WERE NATURALLY CAMAFLOUGED (SPELLING ?). THEY SEEMED TO LIKE BEING PETTED.

Eler Beth's turtles were named Spot and Jane, which I thought were pretty good names for turtles! I think the under shell of a male indents a bit and the females under shell is flat. I may have that backwards though. I know with box turtles the colors of the eyes or the rims of the eyes can tell you the sex. I knew at one time but have forgotten.
