Who Is Afraid Of Thanksgiving?

Not the wild turkeys at our place. We saw the largest flock of wild turkeys today that we have ever seen and they didn't seem to be so afraid. John told me to count them. Well that is like trying to count turtles. The turkeys are going in and out of the tall grass and behind each other and in front of each other. I started with 20 and then more kept coming so it must have been 35 or 40 or more. John had seen them while I was feeding the turtles so he came to get me as he knew I would want to see them. We drove to the dry creek bed which isn't all dry now because of the recent rain (not rain today, it didn't rain like the weathermen said) and there they were just plodding along without a care in the world. I could see the head of one gobbler over the fence in the tall grass keeping up with the flock but not presenting himself. John cut the motor off and we just sat and watched them. When they got out of sight we moved up to watch some more. Then we let them go on their merry way without giving them a fright. I thought to myself these birds don't have any inkling as to what time of year it is. Once my brother-in-law who worked in the oil field brought my sister a wild turkey to bake. It had been eating chilipitin peppers that grow wild around here. They said that gave the turkey such a good flavor and nice odor when cooking. As for the turtles only about seven came up to eat. It was chilly and the wind was blowing some. The sun and the wind was in my eyes so I couldn't tell who had a long tail and who had long toe nails and who didn't. All the renter girls have almost destroyed my sitting place with running their feet up an down the edge of my piece of hard soil. I have to be careful not to fall when I try to get up. Oh well if they don't do anything worse then that they will be fine.

About those turtles? Girls or boys? I've never tried to "sex" a turble. Had a pet mouse once, went to the store to buy it some company. Brought home a nice fat one. Two hours later she had a slew of babies. Mouse with her is Mickey. In three weeks another slew of babies. I didn't kow you had to remove the mail for the first twenty four hours or the female would conceive again immediately after giving birth. Whew. Am I glad I'm not a mouse. Paulette

I would have loved to have seen those turkeys. I did see one big drove one. I counted up to 35 and they were still running across the road in front of our car and down into the woods so I gave up counting. I enjoyed watching them run. Have a happy Thanksgiving Paula. Helen

IT IS GREAT TO HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WILD TURKIES
NORTH OF CANON CITY COLORADO HERE IS A SPARSLY POPULATED AREA ALONG 'SHELF ROAD' WHICH HAS DEEP DROPOFFS AND BEAUTIFUL STREAM OF WATER, COMING OUT IN OPEN COUNTRY NEAR CRIPPLE CREEK.
YEARS AGO I TRAVELLED SHELF ROAD OFTEN AND THE WILD TURKIES WERE SEEN BEFORE GETTING UP IN HIGHER ALTITUDE.
I HAVE VIDEO TAPES OF FLOCKS OF WILD TURKIES RUNNING ALONG AND DEER FROLICING ALONG WITH THEM. TAPES TAKEN FROM A DISTANCE, AND ALONG THE STREAM. A BEAUTIFUL AREA AND HAVE NOT BEEN ALONG THAT ROAD FOR YEARS.
PAULA, TRY TO GET A PHOTO OF THE TURKIES.

I have never had a wild turkey. We usually had a goose for Christmas and thanksgiving. Now of course it is all Turkey from the store. I think I have done all I can as well as far as Marty.

The turkeys probably know it's no longer turkey season, so they feel safe. Or are they still in season there? Wild turkey is so much better than store-bought turkeys. The meat is sweeter and moister.
