Buzzards Have A Place In The Scheme Of Life

This folks is buzzard legs, an unforgivable picture I know. To set the record straight I don't like buzzards. I think they are nasty creatures but they do have a purpose. One time when we went to the place in my header there was a buzzard sitting on the chimney as if she was guarding the house. When we went inside there were two turkey egg size eggs on the kitchen floor. Yuck! I thought this is where we are going to eat when we spend the week-end. John threw the eggs out and boarded up a window where we could see the buzzard had used to take up residence in the old house. The next time we went out she had laid eggs in a shed in back of the house. I had never seen buzzard eggs before so we left them there. It was a nasty old run down shack of a shed anyway. Everytime we went out I would stick my head in and check to see if the eggs were still there. I was so excited when they finally hatched out two little yellow balls of fluff. They didn't look disgusting at all but I didn't touch or get close to them. They grew and grew and soon some long black straight feathers started protruding out. Humm I thought this is starting to look like buzzards. They were buzzards and they started hissing at me when I would look in to check on them. One day they were gone. Flew away to learn to eat disgusting meals of roadkill. We never saw them again.

I love to watch buzzards flying, floating in the air. I just don't enjoy seeing them closeup.

Good entry. I never thought of buzzard eggs. Never had a chance to see them. Glad you got to see them hatched and are here to tell about them. I figured they would be born fuzzy black. Learn something all the time in these country tales. Thanks.
Sherry & Jack in Florida (Where we REALLY have the Buzzards), thousands of them around lake Okechoobee) There they feed from the rabbits burned or run out of the burning sugar cane fields.

I don't think I have ever seen a buzzard in all the years I have lived. Don't want to either. Do you think they eat turtles??

Yes they have their purpose to clean up road kill and other things. I have heard they smell really bad. I have never been really close to one. Helen

What a good experience. I have never seen
the eggs just the buzzard flying. Glad they clean up road-kill. Very interesting and a educational lesson. Thought they would be black.

Buzzards certainly do serve a purpose, but they are ugly critters. Glad to see that you remain busy blogging. I really miss having the time to do this regularly. Ever since aol quit on us I've not been able to get back into the swing. Hope your Christmas was good and that the New Year will bring only health and happiness.

PAULA,
BUZZARDS AND TICKS HAVE THEIR PLACE IN LIFE.
I REMEMBER SEEING ON A TV PROGRAM BUZZARDS TRYING TO GET A SHARE OF A CARCASS WHEN LIONS AND OTHER ANIMALS WERE PREVAILING AND HOW EASY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FOR AN ANIMAL TO GRAB A VULTURE. NO TASTE FOR VULTURES ? sam

Hi Paula,
Yikes ... I'm not quite sure how I would react if I walked into the kitchen and found buzzard eggs on the floor. I think there'd be some choice words involved ... and omelet isn't one of them!
Best,
Marty

I had an Uncle who did the same thing except he didn't lay any eggs. He finally moved though....

Happy New Year!

I really thought about buzzards in a different way when I saw a documentary about the disappearance of buzzards in India brought about by the use of a medicine for sick cows. When these cows died the buzzards ate them and got poisoned and started going extinct. Everybody got alarmed as nobody realized how much the buzzards cleaned up the dead carasses which now were not touched because of no buzzards. I began to hope the ailment would not wipe out all the buzzards here, but after it was discovered what was killing them, they started using something else to treat the sick cows, and the buzzards are reported to be making a comeback, so I was very interested in your tale of hatching buzzards. Glad they have not gone extinct in Texas! I think they were affected in Utah. Gerry
