Answers To Questions

If you have read this before sorry for the repeat. First let me say the barn on my header is on the ranch but just used to store some junk. It has seen it's better days.

To Dar and Mel: The boots on the fence was some of my country decoration the 14 months we lived out there.
The landlord would not let me paint over the rust on the house. This place was divided into three after Mr. and Mrs. B died and John still leases it all but with three landlords. He grew up near the family. He has 33 mama cows there now, I think three bulls and lots of baby calves. It is a small ranch only 377 acres. He also leases the place where his daughter and her mother lives (yes ex-wife lol). He has cattle there too but they mostly take care of them as they have their own and raise goats. Having lots of baby kids now. The big ranch was 1241 acres and he had leased it for 38 years. At one time he had 90 cows there but it was also a farm. He raised peanuts in his younger years then in the last few years sub-leased it to a farmer to raise peanuts and/or cotton. He finally gave it up as at his age (75) it was getting hard to take care of it all and the farmer bought the cattle there so they didn't even have to leave home. We still drive by to check up on the farmer to see if he is doing things right. lol He usually isn't. You can imagine leasing a place that long it becomes a part of you. He had one other place, don't remember the the number of acres but I think two or three hundred. They wanted to sell to him several years ago and he didn't want to buy as he figures with taxes etc. it is cheaper to lease and getting older so they sold it to someone else. He did own one at one time but never really liked the place that much. Ran cattle there until it finally after several years sold . Hope this answers your questions and sorry to bore the ones who have been here and read this before.

I still like the boots. Not boring to re read about the ranch. I think it is interesting. We like hearing from a cowgirl in Texas!

BACK DURING MY BUS DRIVING DAYS, OLD HI-WAY 66 CAME INTO SPRINGFIELD MISSOURI FROM THE WEST.
THE TINY TOWN OF 'HALLTOWN' WAS JUST OUTSIDE OF SPRINGFIELD.

INTERSTATE 44 WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND THE NEW INTERSTATE PAVEMENT ENDED AT HALLTOWN, WHERE A DETOUR TOOK TRAFFIC BACK TO OLD '66'.

ONE NIGHT A GREYHOUND DRIVER WAS DOZING WHILE DRIVING AND WENT OFF THE PAVEMENT THRU THE SMALL BARRICADE SIGN AND INTO A SOGGY FIELD THAT HAD BEEN A CORNFIELD AND OF COURSE NOW WAS PART OF THE INTERSTATE RIGHT-OF-WAY.

TO BOARD THE 'RESCUE' BUS THAT WAS SENT, THE FORTY PASSENGERS MUST WADE THRU MUD AND DOING SO MOST OF THEM LOST THEIR SHOES IN THE MUD.

THE INTERSTATE CONSTRUCTION CREW REMOVED THE BUS FROM THE AREA AND GRADED THE SOIL AND IN DOING SO, TURNED UP DOZENS OF SHOES THAT THE BUS PASSENGERS HAD LOST.
THERE MUST BE A CLOWN IN EVERY CROWD AND ONE IN THE CONSTRUCTION CREW GATHERED UP EVERY SHOE AND PLACED ONE ATOP EACH FENCE POST AS LONG AS THEY LASTED.
LATER, BUS PASSENGERS ASKED DRIVERS, WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ALL THE SHOES ATOP THOSE FENCE POSTS ?
SHORT ANSWER, PEOPLE LOST THEM WHILE WALKING IN MUD. sam

Thanks for filling Mel and me in on your ranching. These are wonderful memories. I know what you mean about a place becoming a part of you after serving and loving it so many years. Just so you know, I don't think anyone in WI has even one of your 'small' ranches. Lucky to have a 40acre chunk.
Sam, your greyhound bus story was a fun read...
thanks again Paula, you too John and Sam
