Don't Ever Raise The Skirt On My Table

I've been thinking of building a coffee table with no nails or hammer involved. You see I used to hate those big wrap-around sectional sofas but somewhere along the way I changed my mind. After all I had a 17x20 living room. Not thinking of a door to the kitchen, a door to the bedroom, a door to the front porch and a door to the bathroom (but thats another story). When it was delivered it took some figuring to arrange it. Not thinking I would ever move. Ha thats when I get in trouble when I think. That big heavy sofa has been moved tree times since then. The first time a mover, so I thought well they are use to heavy things, thats their job. The second time John's son helped and when they were finished he told me if you move again don't call me just get a bull dozer and knock the side of the wall out. I might add it has a hide-a-way bed in one side and two recliners in the other with a table in the middle that opens up for a phone. So when it was moved the third time John called a couple of guys who were always looking for a fast job. Happened they were here in town. John didn't tell them this was going to be a heavvvy job. They came right over excited to make a couple of bucks. When they finished moving my sofa they weren't excited anymore. Oh what I started to say is I need a coffee table. Not wanting to pay the price of a large square one which would be the one that would look nice I've been thinking. Some renters who moved left a thick oval piece of glass months ago. I told John don't dare throw that away, it will be good for something. I saw a very large earth tone flower pot with flowers painted on the sides. I'm thinking hummm why couldn't I buy it and put that glass on top for a coffee table. No, yes, maybe tacky? I did build a table once and it was a success. I wanted one of those little round tables with the frilly skirt. Somehow I ended up with a round piece of wood. I happened to have a brand new garbage can. I turned it upside down and put the wood on top and covered it with a frilly skirt. One year when my house flooded and the water disposing men were carrying my furniture out the one who raised the skirt on my table was quite impressed when he saw it was only a garbage can.

ELAINE: Ah, I'm going to kill myself on that thing. You can't even see it.

I love that idea! My mother once had this tall, oval-shaped cardboard container with a lid. I have no idea where it came from, but she made a pretty, pretty, frilly cover for it and used it as a bedside table. I say buy the flower pot and use that piece of glass and make a coffee table with it!

Good idea! I've seen tables made from old windows with glass put over them with railing spindles for legs)

All that matters is who's around the table -- not how it looks.

Sorry I haven't been by Paula, hope all is well in your world. I'd love to see the new table, I think your idea is a great one! Please don't call me either when it's time to move that sofa! I've been killing myself trying to move my own stuff to clean carpets and paint this summer. I'm totally worn out!
PS - Love the new look here :-)

I love the flowerpot idea as a base for your glass topped table. It would look so cool, not at all tacky. You have a lot of mesquite down there, a stump of it would look cool too...go creative Paula...you have vision!

Those hide a bed couches are generally back breakers. In the days on the farm the men were in such good shape with all the hard physical work moving a heavy couch or piece of furniture was like child's play to them but have now seen men with sedentary jobs develop back trouble from such, so I say they ought to do away with heavy furniture! Men being what they are sometimes lift before they think or can admit they are not in shape! As for me, you could not pay me to it.
