Ungrateful Cows

Wouldn't you think they would appreciate us making a special trip to the ranch to take them our watermelon rinds. We even looked Shelly Marie up grazing out in the middle of the field. John got out of the truck and handed it to her on a silver patter. Well not quite that but with his hand and she sniffed and went right back to grazing grass. I intended to try it on the turtles but forgot as John left me with the turtles while he went to look for a cow who should have had her calf by now. It was peaceful just me and the turtles with the sun down and a gentle breeze blowing. The odd turtles seem to have mulitplied and I don't like thier looks. Their shells are more rounded and not marked as pretty although they were all so murky it was hard to tell. The have a long neck and their head is shaped like a bird. The catfish did come up but not until I was almost out of food. All the places getting so much rain we had a 100% chance and it didn't rain here or at the ranch.

Eler Beth's rabbits have been enjoying a bit of watermelon rind recently. It has been so hot, that is a treat for them!

I just drop the rinds off on the grass near the fence by the fresh water fountain. Next time I walk down to the barn, all's gone.

Reminds me I need to mix some free choice salts.

My mother used to use the watermelon rines to make pickles out of. It's been years since I've had them, but they are absolutely delicious.

We could use some rain here in NY, it's been in the 90's close to a week now. We're not accustomed to having a heat wave like this. (Hugs)Indigo

Those could be musk turtles -- or mud turtles. Might want to do a google image search.

Anytime is watermelon time, you'd think the cows would jump at it ...hmmm...love the stuff myself. I have to make some rind pickles again.
maybe your new turtles are Snappers...be careful if they are...once they grab hold they cannot let go. Ouch!
Have a Cool Weekend

I like watermelon and cantalope also. With just Joe and I I always just get a small wedge or one cut up already.Wonder what kind of turtle you have.

Yeah, I would say ungrateful. Too bad you don't have chickens, they love to peck rinds.

Go ahead, add some chickens out there to feed. You got turtles and catfish, may as well have chickens.

Hope you have a great evening. We too need rain, send it on!
