A House Grave

Old houses make me wonder who lived there and what their life was like. Many times I stop to take a picture and its a good thing because sometime they are no longer there the next time I pass. The first house on my sidebar was a house on the large ranch John leased for over 30 years. I braved the tall grass a few times to rummage around in it. Lots of trash and old mattesses inside but the one thing that interested me was a piano. You say why didn't I take it and have it refurbished? I was very tempted but It smelled so bad in there from rat pee. Anyway several years ago a sign was put on the front by the county or state (not sure which) that this house was a health hazzard and needed to be destroyed. John had a man with machinery dig a large hole and push the house into the hole and bury it and smooth it over. No one would ever know now there is a house grave there with years of memories. Who played that piano?

Those old houses are fascinating. I would not go in any.

I too just love to wonder about old houses and imagine the people who lived in them. I saw some amazing ones back a few years when we lived in a quiet Florida town about an hour east of Orlando called Sanford. There were three story houses in the historic district. Oh and those covered driveway entrances where you know the horse and carriage pulled up to let a fine lady out.

Great photo of the bee on your blog banner! Anita Shreve wrote a series of novels set in the same house over succeeding years. There are several abandoned houses in town, and one does wonder about the people who live there in the past. Often the fire department burns them down in training exercises.

Interesting entry. It is hard for me to pass an abandoned house without wondering what stories lie within. I love the house pictures!!

I had never thought of a house grave. I thought they were planting a house hoping a new one would grow, when I once saw that.LOL

Take care We are headed EAst now, West of Albuquerqer.

Wow, that is so interesting! I've never heard of doing that. I wonder how many house graves might be out there and wouldn't it be nice if they were given a marker with a little history at least.

Have a nice weekend Paula :-)

I always think it's kind of sad to see an old house die. At some time of it's life it was the most important thing to be built and lived in. Three of the old houses that we lived in are now gone. One burnt (not while we were there), one was blown away in a tornado (not while we were there), and one was bulldozed to the ground (not while we were there); but it's still kind of sad to know those houses were there at one time and they were our home and now they're gone. Forever... we couldn't even show our kids where they grew up when they were little.

A good ghost story would be one where you could still hear piano music coming from the hole on certain dark nights.

I'd rather they keep the old homes & stop building condos were deer are trying to sleep.
