Tacos In The Dark Make A Mess

Why is it when you're young and have responsibilites you can't sleep late but wish you could? When you're old and can sleep as long as you want you can't. This was one of those mornings for us. We were up waaaay before daylight for no reason so we headed west. Stopped to get our bean and cheese breakfast tacos, red sauce, chopped onions, and coffee and continued our journey stopping at the well to start water running into the tank for the house water. Then on to the tank dam to eat. Pitch dark and the light in the truck doesn't work so we're fumbling around trying to add sauce and onions. Still too dark to feed the turtles. They couldn't see me and I couldn't see them so we rode around looking for eyes. We spotted some tall lights in the distance so we decided to track them down to see if it was some oil well activitey on other property. We never did find when the lights were and it was getting light. The turtles were waiting, they must have heard us in the dark or felt the vibration of the truck on the tank dam. The ducks were on the other side near the old boat so I started calling them. They came and ate with the turtles being a little hoggish. The wild duck was no where to be seen. He much have wooed and cooed and left. Just like a man. We started for home and a ways up the farm to market road we realized we hadn't seen Shelly Marie anywhere. John said do you want to go back to look for her? Do kids like candy? We looked and looked. I can spot that girl from afar. She is a regal cow with thick horns shaped a certain way and her color and markings are easy to spot. Nowhere to be found so we decided she was taking a rest somewhere. As we were driving down the lane to leave we spotted her out in the field grazing. Mission accomplished and home by ten A.M.

It's really not fair. In my 20s and 30s I could sleep 12 hours easily -- without even needing it. Now I'm lucky to get 6 hours a night. SIGH

I was sitting at my computer messing around at that time of the morning because I couldn't sleep. I finally went back to bed and dozed a while then it was time to get up. Glad that you saw Shelly Marie.

Hi Paula,
It's always such a pleasure visiting here. I'm always so jealous of some of those cowboy breakfasts you get to have there - I would love tacos for breakfast! :-)
You are so right about the sleeping. I can't seem to sleep past 6am now even on the weekends. It always makes me so mad since I look forward all week to sleeping in on the weekend - then again, I get up at 4:30 on weekdays so I guess 6 is sleeping in ::sigh::

I am back to comment a little more, I hope. Loved your trek around and now I know I am not the onlyu ones awake when most people are sleeping.

Love the way the turtles come to be fed. Thank
goodness you saw Shelly Marie. That girl sounds
so cute. At Lake Lure we saw a funny sight
Thursday. It was about 25 regular geese eating with one white part of the group. She look like
the leader. I took pictures because it was
an odd sight. Nature can be so interesting.

I say good for you for getting up and going early. If you can't sleep anyhow, might as well get on with your day!
Best,
Marty

Those kind of people are up with the chickens. The rooster could barely catch them in bed with his crowing. That was some country folk I knew, but they were not trying to find onions in the dark. That is really early! I used to envy young people who could sleep in as we never did. We were aroused for early breakfast as we had too much to do to ever sleep in. Then all my kids got me up except my daughter Ronda who was the only one who liked to sleep in. Her brothers could hardly wait to get at 'em. I will bet John was always an early riser and who likes to rise alone if they can have company?
