It Wasn't An April Fool's Joke

It wasn't a joke and I wasn't laughing. We came home from the ranch for the second time hot and tired. We stopped at the mail box and I couldn't believe my eyes. We got our water bills and mine was over $200.00. So I checked everything faucets, under the sinks, water meter box. I knew my water bill should not be anywhere near that amount so off to the office we went. The lady looked me up on the computer and said she didn't know why it wasn't flagged for rereading since I've never used that much water. She called someone while John and I waited and the meter reader went out to recheck. It was misread so the lady had to subtract and figure and subtract until I came out with $ 50.12. I had a smile on my face after that. You can bet I will start cleaning the dirt out of the meter box. I used to do that and even cut the ends out of a large coffee can to fit down over the meter so the dirt couldn't hide it. Humm what was I thinking? A little job like that would last forever?

I'm glad to hear that your April Fool ordeal had a good ending! I've always suspected that MY meter reader is only guessing half the time. Or perhaps he needs glasses.

I wouldn't even know what a water bill should be, never had one! But I can tell you tales about our electric bill, lol...especially when the a/c runs all the time in July and August :o)

Whew...that's a BIG water bill...glad you were able to get that set straight. It's hard enough to make it these days without mistakes like that.

Glad the lady figured it back down right. Helen

Good thing you got right on that! Once something like that goes for any length of time it has a way of wormimg it's way into the computers billing f-o-r-e-v-e-r! It happened to my parents once and my Dad got all peeved and averaged out what it would cost for a whole year and demanded he be able to pay it in full in advance. Which they had to do because they allowed advanced payment. By doing it for the year though he also got a generas discount...That was my Dad! Piss him off and he throws money at you!..lol I told him that, and he didn't think I was so funny!...I still think it's funny!___=^..^=___Kittie

Thank goodness it was a mistake! I haven't received the water bill since discovering the pipe had burst at the new house - I'll be afraid to look!!

OUCH, my first thought was,"Texas Water sure is high". LOL
I know it was not funny, but glad you got it straightened out instead of paying four months water bill at once.

How is the biggest fool at last? that is good.

I had the same problem with my electric bill once. It was over $500 but thankfully it turned out to be a mistake.

I don't think they ever really read any meters - water, gas or electric. Methinks they just put in an arbitrary number and hope you pay it.

Pauline I think your header is great. The water bill would have me turning around and going to the water bill place. Mine runs around 54.00 and that is plenty.

"Oops, we misread your meter"?!? Seriously, a mistake of that magnitude doesn't sound like a 'misread' to me. Sounds suspicious to me. Their excuse -- a 'misread' -- just doesn't hold water!
