Guess What We Saw

As we were leaving the ranch yesterday I couldn't believe my eyes. I ask John to back up to see if I saw what I thought I saw. Yes it was a horned toad, a young one. A few years ago we saw one crossing the lane and none since. Horned toads eat big red ants and this ranch is loaded with red ant dens or beds so they have always had plenty to eat but they have disappeared. John ask me if I wanted to bring it home and raise it. No it is where it needs to be even though it was tempting because it has been so long not seeing one. It was young so hopefully it has some siblings. Not sure how many babies they have. I must research that soon. Before we left we went looking for Ginger the heifer John bought last July from some people we know. They were moving to the Texas coast and could not take their beloved pet cow Ginger. They did not want her to go to auction so they ask John if he would want to buy her and he did. They thought she was ready to have a calf anytime and boy were they wrong, she was just fat and spoiled. We hadn't seen her for several days so we went looking thinking she may be in trouble. We had looked everywhere and started toward the east part of the property. As we started onto the dam there she was in all her glory with new baby girl in tow. She had given birth and did the necessary chores of cleaning it up then brought it to meet the herd.

Sounds like a wonderful day! I'm always looking here for horned toads but have yet to see one. Plenty of red ant nests too. Maybe some day! So glad Ginger had a calf and everyone is doing well. Love new life!

It sounds like all turned out well for you. I would like to see something that would eat a possum or kill it and bury it. One keeps comming in our yard and walking the fence and Spunky being a hound is determined to get it. Hoe he never does, thank goodness.

I can imagine the joy of finding Ginger with her baby calf!
We have our share of red ants here in the South East, but I have never seen a horned toad.

A Horned Toad, very useful and glad you left him where he was needed. God seems to have a way of putting us where we need to be at the moment, including the critters of the world. Also glad you found Ginger and with a calf. I'm sure she won't be quite so hard to find the next time.
Sounds like she's a good Mama.

Glad to hear you found the horned toad. I haven't seen one in years. When I was a kid in west Texas they were plentiful. On more than one occasion I caught heck for leaving one in my pocket when I put my dirty clothes in the hamper...Wonder how my mom knew it was me? LOL. Congrats on the new baby.
