Big Red Weather

This is not a new picture, the grass is not green except where John has water running constantly and has for about three months. You might say won't the well go dry? That crossed my mind but then when you think about how all the farmers are irrigating, thats a lot of water but I guess it is always a possiblity. This is a picture of Butter and she just had a solid black bull calf. Its a tiny little thing and we think it was born Sunday. With the black bull and so many black ones now that all look alike its hard to name them. Butter had a sister named Oleo but she died several years ago. We went to the ranch early this morning and again in the hot of the afternoon. After checking the cattle and special feeding a few of the poorer cows we drove into town to buy a Big Red soda to share. They are kind of like a Cream Soda and just right for a hot summer day. In the 50's we paid a nickle for one and today John had to pay $1.85. Yesterday when John went out by himself he came upon a buck caught in a double fence. He had jumped over and got his back foot caught. There was a lady whom John knows stopped and she had already called the Game Warden so he went on with his business. John said it was bloody from fighting the wire and trying to get loose. Poor deer, I'm glad I didn't see that. John couldn't tell if it would have to be disposed of or if it could be released and be okay,I hope the latter.

So sad to see an animal traped and hurt. Hope it will be ok.
I bet all of those little black calves are pretty! My brother has a new black bull, guess he'll have little black calves running around too..ha.
Paula, how well I remember those nickle sodas and candy bars.

I wish I lived in the days where a soda was only a nickel!

I like the picture of Butter. the one thing I have enjoyed learning from Paulinescountrytales is how well you guys keep up with the cattle and name them. I love the name 'looker' also.

Hope the Buck wasn't hurt so bad it cannot be released. I think it should be released if it is a live, give it a chance to at least try to survive.
Nice entry again. Big Red soda, who woulda thunk it.
Love from Sherry & Jack in Georgia.

Butter is a perfect name. So you had an Oleo, have you ever had a Cream? I just love the names you come up with. My friend once had a dog named Oreo, being black at both ends with white in the center. Now, I have to show you some of the critters we have had on our little place.
As for the deer, it's a sad thing to see the damage a barbed fence can do to an animal. Nasty, and it isn't even Mother Nature taking control.

I remember nickle sodas and penny candy but that was a long time ago...and you could take the bottle back too! Butter and Oleo, that's a pretty good combination of names, wonder how many young folks would know what you were talking about if you mentioned oleo. I love the picture on your header...burning pear, wow

Butter is a pretty cow. Her color is so good looking . That poor deer. They are declaring open season on them here because we have so many and there have been many deer hits. I for one and Joe for 2 could never shoot a deer.. You look into their eyes and that is all it takes.

My hubby and daughter were fond of Big Red. Hubby knew of it before, since he graduated from Samuel Clemmons HS in Schertz. Hope you are staying cool, Sheila

If the buck has to be disposed of, I hope they can donate the meat to some food pantry. I had a friend who loved Big Red so much that when he moved to Florida where they weren't on the market, his girlfriend would ship him cases of it about every two weeks! I never cared for them too much myself.

I had a Big Red when I was in TX a decade ago and really hated it. I guess it's the kind of thing you have to grow up with.

Butter and Oleo ... what a great pair of names! Maybe the next generation can be Cheese and Whiz?
Best,
