Ginger Has A Baby

Yesterday Ginger didn't come up with the herd and we couldn't look for her much as it was still too wet from the last nice rain. Off we went early this morning and there she was out in the north field with a darling little baby. She was a little protective so we didn't bother her. we found another baby bawling it's head off for it's Mama. We had seen a cow standing alone at the pens and she didn't look like she felt up to par so John figured she was the Mama. He drove her to where the calf was and sure enough it started nursing. The cow was bloated from eating too much clover so John started making her walk to get rid of the gas. He already lost one cow to that so we will go back out late this afternoon and check on her and maybe make her walk more. She wasn't a happy camper but it is for her own good. At the back forty I found what I thought was a coyote skull. It was across from where a coyote had been caught under the neighbor's tall deer proof fence and died so I thought that was where the skull came from. On closer inspection that skull was still under the fence with all the fur attached. The buzzards had devoured the rest. When I showed it to John he said maybe the mate had come looking for the one caught under the fence but what killed it I don't know. There was no fur or other bones. Of course I brought the skull home to add to my collection. While John was walking the bloated cow I walked to the stock tank to feed my turtles. Floor Tile and Raggedy Shell didn't come to eat but about ten others did. Two were brave enough to climb up the rough dam to my feet. When they started back down they kind of slid over the rough terrain where the cows have walked when it was wet and then dries into rough deep tracks. Those turtles needed brakes.

Maybe brave, or maybe they just know you are their eternal friend.

Better Ginger than me. ~Mary

i always get a kick out of the turtles when they come up onto land to grab grain, then rush back into the water to swallow it. :)

hope that mama cow makes it! colic is so dangerous!

Never a dull moment there. I do hope the cow is ok!

Your "family" continues to grow! Maybe, in your spare time, you need to build a ramp for the turtles. Great post, Paula. You make life interesting.
