On The Way To Church

I always enjoy the ride to church every Sunday because it brings back so many childhood memories. We drive hwy.16 along the strawberry capital of Texas. Not much going on there on a Sunday morning except in April when the festival is going on and thousands of people converge on the town to eat strawberry shortcake, dance, listen to the country music and buy arts and crafts. Just the other side of town we turn to the left toward the tiny berg where I was born. We pass a house that has been being built for years by a man John knows. He is building it for his daughter and is ill now and can't seem to finish it. We feel so bad for him and have watched the progress of the house come to a stop. On down to a dairy where I remember eating chocolate candy they had made. It sounds strange but I remember a clean bath tub having the bottom covered with home made chocolate candy cut in squares. They gave each customer and family member a square. This may have been the first chocolate candy I had ever eaten. On to the corner where the big live oak tree stands and catty corner an old house stands where I saw my first real bathroom.  Turn to the left I would go to where I was born but instead we turn to the right and pass the two houses where my aunts and uncles lived. Next the house of my cousin who was killed along with his 15 year old son in a truck/ motor scooter accident many years ago. Past where a house used to be that we lived in when I started to school. So many memories of things that happened when we lived here. I got my first real doll and my cousin smashed it on the cement porch. Baby sitting with my baby sister while my Mama picked peas and for pay she bought me a small but real kerosine lamp just like the ones we used for light. The night we were eating supper around that lamp with good potato soup and the mantle broke and small pieces went into the soup and made it unedible. Too many memories to include here. On past a long line of white river rock where John and I have this little joke of seeing who remembers first to point at the river rock and say "river rock". Silly I know but we do it and I think today was the first time neiher of us remembered to say it. Next come to old vacant country store where we bought groceries every other Friday night and the owners always gave my sister an I a pelon, a free bag of penny candy. Turn right and then right again and there we are at church. We don't have a minister so a college age newly wed youth pastor filled in. He and his young wife are the youth pastors in John's home town and this surprised them to run into someone who knew that town so I explained to them everytime they go to church they are passing John's cows so please give them a wave or a honk of the horn. Only ten people in attendance but good singing and worship and importantly friendly people.

I love your little church. And of course, I love your view of life from Texas as you see it.

You have a talent for writing something interesting from any subject you may choose! I enjoyed the ride to church with you. As you described your way, I could almost visualize your places of endearment.

I am sure you had a good church service with only ten people. It does not even take that many for the Lord to be in your midst. :)

I like the game River Rock. Don't let John beat you..stay on your toes!
I hope your week goes great!

You are the best. Loved your trip to church. I envy folks who stayed one place and know the area up side down. Sherry is like that at our home town.
Thanks for memories of your youth!!!

Love from North Carolina

I miss not having a place I call home - I mean I have my home and I love it - but now since everyone is gone and everyone has moved - I don;t have the wonderful memories you do of home.

What lovely memories of home moments. We lived in Beeville TX when I was about five. I think it is where I experienced my first kiss, I don't remember much about him other than his nic name was "Pee Wee." lol
