Mexico Burning Sugar Cane Stalks

Does the smoke from this get as far as you are? It sure drifts here. Yesterday when I turned onto the highway to drive to the town to the west of us to buy some Nolan Ryan beef it looked like the whole town was on fire from the smoke. I kept watching for a fire somewhere but didn't see anything or hear sirens. When I got home and watched the news they announced Mexico is burning the stalks to get rid of the trash after harvest. They do this every year but I always forget. I don't think the smoke is good for us. I wonder how far it goes and if anyone feels bad effects from it?

I don't know about Mexico, but in Florida, down around Okeechobee, they burn 'BEFORE' the harvest to make sure they get only stalks when they harvest. The Smoke rises fast and the trash settles on every thing. I have seen flames 70-80 feet in the air. It looked like a giant forest fire, when we were camping nearby. It was scary at first, until someone who lived there, explained.

I was once told it is not harmful, but keep in mind that was from someone involved with doing it, so...

There are not many things I hate - but burning leaves which is legal here - I HATE! I can't breathe with my asthma. So I feel for you.

That is quite interesting. Smoke always effects those with COPD. Hope nobody suffered to much because of it.

It was hazy here yesterday so yes it was probably from that...

It's been hazy here in central Texas the past two days and I told my hubby it looked like there were wild fires burning somewhere....maybe the wind is carrying it up this direction. I know tonight on the weather, they showed the currents that are producing all these tornadoes and hail and storms....and it was coming from down south, being dragged up from systems in the north. It's got to affect people with asthma!

I have never seen sugar cane burning. I would have imagined it would be heavy smoke. Terrible tragedy in Oklahoma. I have always said I would never live in Oklahoma. We went through there often when Marty and Lori were still together. Guess I will just stay in Ne.

Wow, I never knew they had sugar cane down there. Smoke is always extremely bad on the sinuses.

Hubby and I were coming home from a day out with his mom last Saturday. I noticed it and commented on it but we thought it was smog. Later that evening we learned it was smoke. It really made the city of San Antonio look weird.
