A Much Needed Tool In South Texas

It doesn't hurt to have several of these in handy places and that be tweezers. Not many days go by when I don't have to pick some kind of sticker out of John's leg, foot, hand. Of course I have to pick my own out since John has a sight excuse. Have you ever tried to hold a pair (why are they called pair when they are just one?) in your left hand and try to pick a sticker out of your right hand when you are right handed? Actually my reason for writing this is to tell you grass burrs have learned to preserve them selves. They have learned to grow and spread instead of getting tall when they produce their mean hurting little burrs. I noticed my neighbor who mows and trims my yard (for a fee, of course) doesn't seem to have as many grass burrs as I do. I have hoed, I put out Weed and Feed twice a year, I have pulled by the roots. Then I thought he mows his yard more often so the burrs doesn't have a chance to make so many mean little devils. I gave him free rein to do my yard anytime he does his, thinking I'll beat em' yet. Now they have gotten smart and grow so close to the grown and spread out so the lawn mower goes right over them without harming them. Guess I'll just buy another pair of tweezers and make sure I wear my house shoes on the carpet and I know better then to go outside barefoot.

After living in Arizona for a decade before moving to the coast in Texas, I learned something of value. I too have a hubby who can't see well when it comes to those nasty cactus needles in MY hands....and tweezers oftentimes just broke off the top while the smaller sharp end stuck inside, under the skin.

A physician in Tucson told me the trick...and it works for us who have to do it themselves....spread Elmer's Glue [thickly] over the cactus needle...let it completely dry....pull up and away the glue after it dries and the entire cactus needle comes out nicely.

Oh, and I hate burrs.

Our nursery man here said to let your grass grow tall and that it will shade out the weeds and also shade your grasses roots so that you don't have to water as much. It seems to have worked here, although some weeds do still pop their stinky little heads out now and then.

the bur clover aren't too bad but those other sharp stickers are awful! the dogs just stop and wait for me to come to their rescue to pull those devils from their paws! the prickly pear - yikes!

Burrs hurt, that's for sure. And yes I have had to use the opposite hand to get one out. TEDIOUS for sure.

Lots of stickers are bad but the grass spurs ARE SNEAKY, and do hide. Funny you should mention the name pair. I thought of a pair of pliers. They be just one too.

Yeah I sympathize with trying to get them out on your own.....

I don't like what they do to the cat's fur, poor baby. Not fond of stepping on them myself.
