A Real Country Tale

One day we were going from one place to another where the land had a lot of brush. I thought I spotted a tombstone in the brush. I persuaded John to turn around and go back. I walked to the fence and peered through the brush. Wow a tiny cemetery! Farther down there is  a house that sits much farther back off the road and it is much newer then this cemetery. Not sure it's on the same property. I looked for this little cemetery every time we traveled this road which wasn't often. I really wanted to go look at the tombstones but it looked very snakey plus it is on private property. I always wondered why the people who lived near by didn't go over and try to keep it clean as best they could. One day to my surprise someone had cleaned it the way you see here. So I got brave and climbed the fence to have a look. Couldn't read any names and there is not a name for the cemetery. Then the brush took over again. Now that John doesn't ranch on as many places as he did we haven't had reason to drive that way lately. I was reminded of taking this picture when I read in the news yesterday about a lady finding cremains of a lady she didn't know while cleaning out a closet of an office.

If the cemetery was cleaned out, at least it hasn't been forgotten. We had a little one in the woods near our old house, teens had vandalized it and moved (and stole) some of the stones. It was never cleared in all the time we lived there, a shame they were forgotten.

It is unique to find these. We found a few as we travel one in Kentucky in the middle of the woods and a couple on the trail as we hiked. YOu make a lot of interesting finds, Glad you do not find a body!

Cemeteries are an 'attraction' to me. I would've done the same [once the tall grasses were cleaned out]. I wonder what the history is...a family plot maybe?

It's sad it has been neglected, maybe there is no family left to tend it. Wish the names had been readable (is that a word?). Take care, Sheila

Appears to be some very old markers. These kind of things really make you wonder about the folks that are there: who they were, what their life was like, what took them from this earth, etc.

The history of the people laid to rest there have not been forgotten. You keep them in your thoughts and now ours, so they live on even though the place is overgrown.

We often stop and look at Old Tombstones when traveling, our first date was with some wine, cheese and table cloth and met in Barnes Corners Cemetary, lunch, walked and said hell'o to everyone in there, nice quiet beautiful day!!!
