Thirty Years Ago

San Antonio had the biggest snow I've ever seen. It was beautiful, it was exciting, it was the week-end. By Monday we were a little tired of it and it was melting and slushy. When Mel came home from work he put his good camera on the table. He had taken it to work with him to take pictures of the snow and deer. We decided to go out to eat being tired of staying in. I left my nice new coat on the bed deciding it wasn't really that cold. As we left we saw a car with several men in it staring at us with our boots on climbing into Mel's work truck. When we came home a short time later a policeman was in his patrol car by our house. He ask if we had left guns on the bed. No, we hadn't. He said I think someone broke into your house. In shock as we saw that our big micro-wave was gone, my coat, his camera. My jewelry box was upside down on the bathroom floor. A few guns gone but they must have been scared off and didn't get them all. A terrible feeling a stranger has gone through your things.
Took all the pleasure our of the beautiful snow which we haven't had one like that since. We stayed up all night putting double headed nails in our windows so they couldn't be opened unless we wanted them to be opened. I'll never forget this snow, for it's beauty and for bad people.

What a bitter sweet memory. In our home state of NC we had a little snow but seldom a big one. Sherry said she thought the last one was in '79. But we enjoyed them also.

The breakin? one of the most frustrating things, to think anyone has been among your things. We have had about 3 break in's and everyone frustrating, the loss is bad enough, but the privacy!!!
I feel no sympathy for anyone shot breaking into a home. I hate the terms we use now, 'Home invasion' yeah right.
Anyway it was a good blog entry...

One of my friends at work had a burglar break into her house....while she and her husband were cooking out in the back yard. She is a petite lady....she went inside with the hamburgers and when she saw the burglar, she started screaming at him, "what are you doing in my house?" over and over and over....chasing him with a spatula...it's a wonder she lived through that....and the man didn't kill her....no, he just ran out and never returned. He didn't get anything, either. It's really funny to hear her tell the story....she is so UNTHREATENING! lol.

So sorry you had to experience that...and so sorry they ruined the snow for you!

Some memories would be better forgotten, if only we could. That would be hard to take - and here you are 30 years later and it's probably crystal clear as if it were yesterday. So sorry.

Oh wow - so sad that this happened many years ago but thankfully it was just possessions stolen and nothing else!

Bad people can ruin a beautiful day. So sorry your memory of the snowfall was.

Oh my gosh....how heart breaking to read this. You feel so violated I know. At least, to find a silver lining in all this, you two weren't home to be harmed in any way.

how awful to always have that memory tainted by invasion.

a few years ago we had 10 inches at once here - stayed on the ground several days. it was the best snowfall i've experienced in 30 yrs in texas.

The news covered the memory of the snow storm a couple of nights ago. So sorry that you had the awful experience.

Yes I can see how having your house broke into would put a damper on the big snow. I was just reading about that snow storm. Our big snow here was on December 24 2004. We got 12 inches and Michael was just over a year old and doesn't remember it. I bundled him up and took him out and he screamed because he fell face forward into it. Now he loves the snow.
