What Happened To The Rattlesnakes?
I hope you can see the snake in the dead grass. Since the weather has been so bad there have been no riding on county roads to find things to take pictures of. I'm not complaining, we appreciate every ounce of moisture we get. This is not a new picture of course. We haven't seen a Rattlesnake in a year or two. The ranch was always noted for Rattlesnakes. John thinks the wild hogs have thinned them out. They have even been seen or killed in the yard of the farm house. When we lived there for fourteen months I kept the yard mowed and trimmed short so we never encountered one in the yard but did see them in other areas. After we moved and the house was rented out we went out one day to find the renter cutting open one of the snakes he said he killed by the front steps. He intended to make a hat band out of the skin. Another renter later said he killed one near the front steps making me think they lived under the house since there was a door to the plumbing under the house near the steps. We miss seeing them. In years past when we would see one crossing the road we would stop and hop out to kill it with whatever we had in the back of the truck. John would cut the rattles off and I would pick them up with a napkin or Kleenex, take them home to put in my collection. When I'm gone my girls will open a long metal box with Rattlesnake rattles in it. What will they do with them? Throw them in the trash, keep them (I doubt it), give them to someone who is artistic? Humm I wonder.
