War Ration Book

How many are old enough to remember families having to use ration books to buy sugar, coffee, gasoline and such during the war? The family got one for each member of the family. I was just a young kid so don't remember all the details but I probably remember sugar the most since I've always been a sugar junky. I'm trying to change that. There was a book with each family member's name on it. My mama saved some when they no longer used them. Later she offered a book to each of us with our name on it. I took mine and saved it all these years, not sure about my siblings.

Your mama was very insightful. Not every one was, seems some folk can see into the future better than others. I am sure that is the source of the start of MANY memories of good, but sad times when the WORLD was truly at war. The home folk did what they had to do to support those in Harms way. Thanks for posting this.

Those were tough times for sure. What a wonderful reminder to be frugal. A great keepsake, indeed.

I missed all of that, but grew up learning to save bread ties and bags, to cut the mold off of cheese and eat it anyway, to toast stale cereal to eat and so many other things because of a mother who had gone through it. Thanks for sharing this! I've never seen an actual book before.

Do you think our nation could/would ever sacrifice like that again, calmly and peaceably? Or would the well to do buy it all up and leave everyone else to do without or resort to anarchy?
