We're Safe

John's daughter called to wake us from a deep sleep to tell us there was a tornado headed our way, get ready. Duh! How do you get ready? We dressed, I grabbed some water and a battery operated lantern. Couldn't get woke up, couldn't wrap my brain around what to do. Looked into the bathroom, contemplated getting into the tub. Instead I sat dumfounded in the recliner. How do you get ready for a tornado to hit? The news station was comforting giving a blow by blow description of where it was. Passed us by and heading for the town were we buy cattle feed. Pray for those people. Before long they gave the all clear to any tornados. Thank you Lord, its 3:30 now. I should go back to bed but I don't think I can sleep.

Oh my...scary. I can understand why you didn't feel like sleeping after THAT!!

Irene, our daughter experienced a tornado first hand the beginning of this month...where she works. They lost some of the roof and a storage warehouse completely.

If you don't have a basement or a storm celler....yeah, where do you go? When I grew up in the Dakotas, we had storm cellars scattered around the farm because we didn't have phones and radios to warn us.

Paula, thank God you and the others are safe.
I've been through tornado warnings many times when I lived in the Ozarks and there's nothing more terrifying - especially in the middle of the night.

i understand perfectly. i went to bed, knowing bad storm cells were heading this way after several tornadoes had hit sw of ft. worth. i woke up with the lightning getting stronger, checked the intellicast radar on my phone, saw a curving band of bad weather coming so cleared space in the front closet, flashlights, 1 dog bed, a stool for me and waited. 1 dog of 4 stayed with me in there with the door open. the others stayed in the bedroom with the light on. thankfully, we did not get damage here and only lost power for brief moments.

The tornado warning is always scary, and in most of our Texas towns with no basement, I think one has to find their way to the bathroom and hope for it to blow over. I've seen them do some devastating things in Illinois.

Tornadoes are really scary. I haven't experienced one first hand but the images I see on TV or internet are enough to make me worry for those who are affected.

Hope everyone out there stays safe.

Tornadoes are scary. I sit here terrified every time the phone buzzes the warning. There is nowhere for me to go.

Years ago, an F4 or F5 came through and we had an interior bathroom where we took the animals and hung onto the toilet. The sound was horrifying. The funnel passed behind the house about 200 yards behind our row of houses. All we had was a few tree limbs down. Several neighbors a couple blocks away were injured and one killed. That was one bad tornado!

I think we would pretty much do the same. I suppose the furnace room would be ok.
at least we could hold the water pipes that are embedded into the concrete foundation.

The other morning at about 1 a.m. the tornado sirens went off. One of them is 1/2 mile from our house so there is no possibility of sleeping through it. We get up and struggle into our clothes and then wonder if we really need to go down to the basement -- to do that we have to go outside and around the house -- and so we turn on the weather radio and stand at the window and the back door (neither of which is a good idea). We were lucky this time, the storm passed there was no tornado in our town, others not so much -- it struck about 10 miles away.

What a way to get woken up! I have no idea how you get ready, Tub sounded good, but the recliner was just as well. WOW that was close.

I'm glad you dodged the bullet. We did the same thing a few nights ago. But we always lose power and don't have any word of what's happening. Then the next night we had power and the storm hit in the morning. Power went off at 5 a.m. and didn't come back on until 5:30. we didn't have that much damage around here but other places had quite a few trees down. When the wind started blowing I at least put on my socks so if it blew me away I wouldn't be barefooted. But I kept my nightgown on. Go figure!
