Lucky Ducky

Most every afternoon after supper John will say "want to go feed the ducks"? Well it isn't always high on my list because if I don't stay in the truck the chiggers will eat me up. They don't bother him. Most times I will say "okay". This is so not John's personality. He always only liked animals that make money, as in selling cows at auction. New hobby for partial retirement I guess. Anyway the ducks were so hungry yesterday. They acted as if they knew our truck. When we pulled over out of the little lane onto the grass they came running. I thought when John opened the door they were going to climb in. I spotted one a distance away hanging around two fishermen. I guess they were ignoring it because when it saw our truck it came waddling as fast as it could to join the others at their feast. I never realized ducks are territorial. We see the same number of ducks every time in the same area of the river and we have learned to identify the same ones together. One day we saw a man in a white truck going along to each group and throwing out some kind of grain. We thought he might be from the city since they did put out the duck crossing signs, but they sure hadn't been fed yesterday. They were hungry and ready to eat. We're just waiting to see a mama duck with a string of babies trailing behind her like the signs indicate. So far we haven't been lucky to see this.

They were glad to see y'all coming. Maybe it won't be long before there are some baby ducks. Take care and stay cool, Sheila

Pretty ducks, I'm sure they appreciate the food in their own way.

For some unknown reason, it's always fun to feed the ducks. My parents always fed the geese in Texas. Geese can be very aggressive and territorial.

I've seen them seriously multiply in a location!

John has a soft spot??? LOL Good for him I always enjoyed feeding ducks, I don't know why, they sure are messy and cannot find a litter box. My daddy had a statement, 'slick as Goods Grease', Imma thinking he meant their droppings. (smile)

so cute that you go feed them.

Surely, there are things they manage to eat on their own, but I'm sure with many gathered together in one place, some days the pickins might be very slim.
Pete is the one that insects like to nibble on.

each had a mom & dad
one had 4 babies
one had 9 babies
the mom with the most babies
would quack up a storm
if, the mom with the 4 babies
got too close
to her family

I bet they do recognize your truck! When we were in California last year, there was ponds within the complex we were at. And on those ponds were coots, and this one little coot would come swimming over and follow us all over when it heard Lorelei's voice.

What a wonderful thing to do every day :) So sweet that they already know your truck and can't wait to join the feast you're giving them :)
I love that picture of them.
I hope you are doing well.
Sending you a big long hug,
Beate

Awwwwwwwww, this post was priceless!!!
Yep, there is something about semi-retirement and birds. lol

Love the fact that they came running up to be fed.

And, Paula, love the beautiful sunflower on your 'quiet' post.

I hope we can hear from you soon. I know how hard this can be as I've had some pretty bad reactions from yellowjacket stings. My computer died and I'm just getting back on so finding out about your troubles a little late.
