Playing It Forward

A few days ago we were in line at Walmart and you know how they never have enough checkers. We waited a long while for the checker to check out a big bill of groceries for a young woman. The groceries hadn't been put into the buggy yet and the woman dug around in her purse to pay then she had to turn around to tell the checker she left her billfold at home so they had to transfer all the groceries back into the cart to push it aside while she went home to get her money. I could tell she was so embarrassed for  making a line of people wait. My heart went out to her and I so wanted to pay for her groceries but with what I bought and her large family size I knew I didn't have that much money with me. To be honest I guess I'm generous but not quite that generous but it was on my mind all week. Today at Dairy Queen I bought an order of chrispy tacos for John and I to share. When the clerk told me my amount then she said something I didn't understand. When I ask again she said she paid for yours pointing to the left. I guess my mouth was agape when I saw it was a young lady with a stud in her lip and someone I had never seen before. Someone I probably would have judged being of the age I am and coming from being raised straight and narrow. I thanked her profusely and she smiled and said God Bless you. I know this playing it forward is happening a lot now but it was my first time. My daughter and son-in-law had it happen to them in a nice restaurant and my neighbor and her friend had it happen to them. I just had my faith restored in the younger generation. Lots of bad things happening even in our small town but there are still good people in our world. Now it's my time to play it forward.

WOW, that is sweet and a great story. It does make you feel good when there is a pleasant surprise. I am glad you told us, I feel good.
Thanks....

That's an amazing story and it truly does restore faith in humanity. My mother was generous to do it a few times, but I never have.
I'm stingy because I don't have enough cash to spare.....

It's nice to hear that, but sorry you couldn't pay it forward for the unlucky gal. I can see it though, that was quite a bit of $

There's another nice thing we can do for other people and ourselves - pay them a compliment, and then walk away smiling. I like to do that now and again, doesn't cost a cent and it makes me and the recipient feel good. Just tell them how nice that color dress/sweater/blouse looks on her or how sharp that guy looks this morning/afternoon/evening. (these are just examples) Has to be somebody you have never seen before. :) Makes a body feel good!

Indeed. How very nice. Having taught 12 grader many years with very few exceptions I never lost faith in any "younger generations." Now some of their parents was another matter....

Definitely a wonderful gesture. I'll bet you reciprocate to someone else you've never met and it will make their day, just like it did yours!

Some books have confusing covers and I would have probably thought the same thing. Nice to see some of today's youth reach out like others have in the past. Inspiring post.

Imagine what kind of world it would be if we do this all the time. Aw. Bless that lady who paid for you.

Too sweet!! I always try to do something nice on Friday for somebody. One Friday in the grocery store I saw a Mother buying groceries and dealing with a couple of toddlers. I had a bouquet of flowers in my cart. When I got done paying and was leaving I gave her the bouquet and told her she was a wonderful Mother and to keep up the good work!! She started crying and said thank you!

I get the blessing of blessing others this way, especially on the military base. Sometimes, an EMT crew that happen to come in for the day. I am by no means rich and live on a budget, but am so thankful God has been good enough to give me some to spare to help others or make their day. I so appreciate them and their service to all of us, it is the least I can do. Good message! Thank you for sharing!

This would just make my heart melt. With all the bad going on now, these stories are so wonderful to hear.
My grandchilren's school is in the news right now because a group of atheists tried to stop them from praying. It's amazing to watch the good in everyone come out, and heart wrenching to read the hateful, vile, and mean spirited things others have to say.

I've had that happen to me, too. And I've payed it forward and plan to again. :)
