Preparing For The Arrival Of The Hummingbirds

They always arrive here on March 15th but since it has been such a warm winter I thought they may come a little early. I hate to see the first one arrive then I have to hurry to mix the nectar and wait for it to cool. So I have a jar already mixed and in the fridge. the feeders are in place where we can watch them from the recliner in the living room or while we eat at the kitchen table. It seems like I just cleaned the feeders and put them away. It is a chore since I have to change the fluid often because of the hot sun. If I placed them under trees we wouldn't be able to watch them that much. Under the eaves of the house gets lots of sun certain times of the day and the juice sours quickly. I always look forward to their coming but by the time they leave I'm ready to take a break.

Oh yes they are a delight. We only started putting out feeders in the last few years. I haven't noticed what day they come in. I did not know they were that precise. Nature is an amazing thing. I guess I will wait until we get back from my operation to put ours out.

sending love, hugs and all to you and Brother John!

i had to remove mine from the trees a couple of years ago as the squirrels discovered them. had to hang them on s-hooks up near the house.

I'm sure you are excited for the hummer season to begin! It's wise to put out the feeders a shade early for what I call the 'scouts.' I love watching the little birds, but had to quit using the feeders. We have more than our share of wasps that hang around ...

I don't even attempt to feed them because of one of my kitties...she would be after them and I have seen her do astonishing feats just to nab a butterfly in the air.

I'm happy to be back in Arizona where the hummingbirds stay all year! Also we have all varieties rather than just the one variety we had in East Texas! Enjoy the hummers!
