A Test?

Humm I didn't know I was going to be tested. Ruptured duck? I thought everyone knew what a ruptured duck is. Then some of you got me to thinking. Well everyone says it, but do I really know what it is. So I got out my Webster's dictionary. Rupture: A breaking or tearing apart. Also HERNIA. Ruptured: to cause or undergo rupture. Duck we all know its a fowl that waddles when it walks and goes quack quack. So I would say if a duck is breaking apart or tearing apart it would be hurting, right? So not having the brain we do it would probably move faster then a waddle to try to escape the hurt. Heck I don't know, who makes up these sayings? My favorite show is The Millionaire show where contestants answer questions and try to win a million dollars. I don't even know the correct name but Meridith Viera is the MC and I love to answer as many of the questions as I can. Last week John was saying he doesn't think she is married because she flirts too much. I said I think she is. Our question was answered when a lady was on and she kept refering to her wife (yes her wife) who has MS. Meridith said she knows what a trial that disease is as her husband has it. Hope I answered your questions.

All US Service Men were issued the "Ruptured Duck" at the end of their service in WW2. It was issued either as a patch or a pin (patch was more common). It was warn on the right breast of the uniform and signified that, even though you were in uniform, you had completed your service. It was issued because most soldiers coming home did not have any civilian clothes to wear initially, so they had to wear their uniform. When in uniform, the soldier, sailor or airman was subject to military discipline. The patch showed all the MP's, SP's and other military police, etc. that the soldier had discharged and was not to be bothered. It was also a source of pride for the soldier to show he had done his duty.

The original Ruptured Duck was a cloth insignia depicting an eagle inside a wreath. Well, the boys thought the eagle looked more like a duck; and, because it meant they were going home, the popular saying was, "They took off like a Ruptured Duck"...hence the nickname.

Thank you Woody for the explaination- I have many in my family who have served but never once heard of a Ruptured Duck. I, like many would of thought it to be a duck that wasn't getting along as the others did. Thanks for both of your inputs. See I learn something new everyday - Thanks to my online friends. Take care and be safe,
Katie

Hi Paula. I'd prefer a roasted duck. There are so many sayings like that that I never really do too much deep thinking as to why. Have a great day :)........

It's an old WW-2 term and my Dad got one when he came home from the Navy-WW-2. I don't ever remember getting one when I got home from two years of combat in Vietnam as a helicopter door gunner in 1970, but I had my honorable discharge papers with me anyway and I went straight home to Beautiful Wisconsin rather than lose all my discharge money in Oakland or Frisco. I am still readjusting form PTSD.
I love your blog!

What an interesting story that Woody told. I knew someone would come up with the answer here. I can't say I ever use that expression, but I bet I will think about it now.
