We went to the ranch to get everything ready to work cattle tomorrow. Closing gates, opening gates, sometime I don't know what John is doing and why. The cowboy with his horse will be there early. We haven't seen the visiting longhorn lately that the cowboy is supposed to give a ride home in his trailer. Suspiciously one of John's new cows and her calf has been missing too. She is a wild one. John and I played this little scenero in our minds. We decided Ms. Longhorn had lured John's cow and calf home with her. Telling them the groceries were better where she came from. Luring them through the fence where we presume she crawled through. We went hunting them down clear to the back of the back forty. What to our wondering eyes did appear but the wild cow with her calf near the fence which was seperated as if the longhorn had seperated it with her long horns and crawled through. Wild cow doesn't have any horns. When she saw us she ran as far and as fast as she could with her baby in hot pursuit. When she felt safe she stopped to look back then went on and we didn't see her again. John did a little fence repair and then we drove along the fence looking for breaks. When we got near the dry creek bed I spotted the cutest donkey on the next property. There was two of them when I looked closer, the kind that have the cross on their back. We stopped to talk to them, they came near the fence. Probably hoping for a hand out which we had nothing to feed them. Tomorrow the cattle will be put into the pens for vacinations and to load any John decides to sell. He has to be very careful to give all the baby calves their shots on this place as for some reason they sometime get blackleg here and it isn't a good disease. Nice weather here today, not too hot or not too cool but we're still praying for rain.

OK, I give up. What is blackleg?
I'll pray for rain for you too!
I'm glad that you found the cows!
I'd like to know what blackleg is as well.
I was hoping you would get some good rain from the storm I sent your way this past week. I guess it did not reach far enough. I thought about you guys when Bones the toughest bull on the rodeo circuit got ridden this week by what I think was a Texas bullrider. That is the only place I see real bulls now is when I watch bull riding on TV. I watch golf for green pastures. But you guys have the real thing so I read your blog for authenticity and because it always brings back memories of ranch life in southern Utah.
I hope he gets them all rounded up so he can give those shots to those babies. Helen
Wow, that is country talk. Sure beats sitting in Houston traffic! "What to our wondering eyes did appear..." You gave me a Christmas carol flashback.

Read that wild cow the right act and tell her
she must not run but let her baby get ready to
meet people. How cute that you saw two donkeys they are sweet animals. I am learning
so much about living on a ranch. Maybe someday I will be a cowgirl. I do have a friend that is from Texas.

Ms. Paula,
I got your card today. I just wanted to say thank you! I hadn't checked my PO BOX in a while so I'm sure I'm late picking picking it up... It means a lot though.. Thank you!
*HUGS*
Hope you get some of the rain we've been having. We needed it, too :).....
I'm glad the cows & baby are now accounted for. I dread when we work the buffalo - I don't like to see them so stressed out going through the chutes but I know it needs to be done for their own health. I hope all went well with working the herd for you guys.
Boy! We need rain here too really bad. Janie
