Hummingbirds Are Here

We were going out the door this morning and John said wait there is a hummingbird on the feeder. We stood and watched it for a while before we left. It was so cold I didn't have any idea they would come before Sunday. Actually we only saw one. I think they might send a scout ahead of the others, not sure about that. It seems we usually see only one at first. Once I was sitting on my back porch steps and saw a hummingbird on my clothes line. The wind was blowing kind of gently like and the bird was trying to hold on. I tip toed to the clothes line and slowly raised my finger to just even with the bird. He/she stepped over onto my finger and stayed there for a second. I was so excited I called the county agent and did he burst my bubble. He said that was not so unusual. Oh well I lost my claim to fame there. John and I enjoy the hummingbirds so much. We have a feeder we can see from the table and one we can see from the front door. They put on quite a show with their antics even for Susie. I think she is unusual because she never catches birds which I'm glad of.

I was wondering if they would make it by Sunday. I was inside the doorway and saw something really fast zoom across the porch last week and wondered it was an ealy hummer passing through. I have not put a feeder out yet. Helen

I put a feeder out about 3 or 4 days ago but have not seen any little visitors yet. Strange though because here in SoCal where I live I see the out and about all year when I'm out on my walks.

I love the hummers. When I had my house in the country (before apt. living) I had so many hummers it was hard to keep up. I'm going to send you a photo or two in an email.

I think the county agent is lupee. That is
the first time I have heard of a hummingbird
sitting on a person finger. I think you have
bragging rights.

I have never heard of anybody who got a hummingbird to sit on their finger. I think you do have that claim to fame, maybe that county agent was just envious...ha. Hope you are still getting some rain. Sorry about your bad luck on Thursday. Have a great day, Sheila

Hi Paula,

I just love hummingbirds also! This weekend I bought pots with hummingbirds on them and bird food. I have to find a nice hummingbird feeder to put on my porch so I can watch them. I would think it was special if a hummingbird landed on my hand !
