This picture is an old peanut shaker left sitting where the original owner left it many years ago. I think there should be a peanut digger with it. The digger dug them up and then the shaker picked them up and as it turned the dirt fell off. I guess you would call this a modern convience at one time as people use to have to shake them by hand. Hot hard work. No I never did that and I never picked cotton but Iknow a lot of people who say they did. I did get to comb my hair this morning but no time for make-up. John was going to Poth, Texas to buy feed tubs for the cattle and he was getting antsy. Nice drive over and back and it was cool. I had a memory flash on the way home. We pass a ranch where a little girl lived who took ballet lessons with my daughters in san antonio. Her mother and I talked a lot while waiting for the girls to finish. They lived out here and we lived in the city. She used to tell me that movie stars would come to buy cattle from them. I wasn't sure about that but seeing the ranch now I do believe it. The long curved drive is lined with flag poles and it is a large ranch. One day my daughter came home and ask me if she is too young to stand with her hand on her hip. No I said and why do you ask? Well Dee (not her real name) said I am too young to stand with my hand on my hip. I said well I am your mother and I say you can stand with your hand on your hip if you want to. lol Back to the here and now--we brought the feed to the ranch and John unloaded. Good times are over for the penned cow. John fed her and then turned her out with the herd. She will have to fend for herself now. She is strong enough now. The little orphan calf is really learning how to get a free meal ticket. It stays right with another calf. When that calf nurses it will get behind the mother and nurse that way and the mama cow is none the wiser. If she knows it isn't her calf she butts it away. When we came by the rent house we noticed the renters vehicles were home. We thought they had a day off from work so John stopped to collect the electrical payment. Renter guy came out in his pjs rubbing his eyes. He paid and said what time is it? I've got to call my boss, I'm supposed to be at work. Hummm yesterday was payday so I guess it was too much beer day too and too sleepy to get up day today.

When you need beer you need to work
I have never seen peanut machinery before but my granpa used to have an old pea thrasher. Makes me wonder whatever happened to it. Now picking cotton, I have done a lot of that. Good for the orphan calf sneaking milk from behind LOL. Smart calf. You and John have a nice weekend.
Never picked cotton...but, tobacco...picked my fair share of that.....love the picture

I'd say renter's boss shouldn't pay him until Friday at the end of shift...lol. I'm glad to hear the calf is getting some mother's milk (from anyone's mother). Funny how old memories come back in a flash with just a little nudging.
Hugs, Joyce
Just don't think I could collect as often as John does for rent and .elec. Amazing how important work is to some folks, huh?
slick orphan calf, huh?
Good entry

Have a good Sunday!
I'm glad Eler Beth and I never knew there was an age when it wasn't appropriate to stand with your hand on your hip, because she has always done that! lol Glad the little orphan calf is doing so well.
