I Been Thinking

Are frogs and turtles not compatible? I know I could research it but today is like Monday. We have no Monday this week. Yesterday was Sunday. We had two Sundays so today will be laundry day and all the usual things I do on Monday. Oh what was I saying? I've been thinking there are no frogs in the stock tank with the turtes. I find that odd. The large ranch that John leased for over thirty years and recently gave up has three stock tanks on it. Two depend on rain for their water and the one where there is a well is loaded with frogs. However I have never seen a turtle in it. I find that odd and makes me wonder if frogs and turtles are not compatible. When I first started online journaling I wrote about one of the stock tanks going dry with just a small puddle in the middle. I saw there were fish jumping in the puddle so I brought some fish food. The ground around the puddle looked hard and crusty so I had no qualms about running to the edge to feed the fish. One leg sunk to my knee and I couldn't get out. i'm glad John was with me or I would still be there. Anyway I know fish are compatible with frogs and turtles but I'm wondering why there are no frogs with the turtles. I like frogs and I like to hear them.

You are a hoot. Sherry is reading on the other side of the table after I told her this week did not have a Monday. I sure am glad John got you unstuck, been terrible for you to have to wait for rain to fill the tank so you could swim out! Someone would have had to came and thrown food to you. I can her it now, "Where you been?"
"Don't be mad mama, I been throwing food to that stuck woman down at the tank!"
Do you feed everything? LOL
Loved the entry!

Hi Paula....I am with you...this is Monday...but it isn't is it??? oh well...on to the important topic of the day...frogs and turtles...I haven't the vaguest idea why they are not together at your place...Texas is so big maybe they figure why crowd together...we have plenty of room....and maybe the turtles don't like having the frogs croaking all the time...keeping them awake...and maybe turtles are just anti social...or the frogs....you know I could go on all day here but space is limited...LOLOLOL....hahahahahaha....and boy it is a good thing John was along...and that he was in a good mood and got you out LOL...but then again maybe he was thinking...who will fix my food if I don't get her out....???? well guess I have rattled along here...LOLOL...as for me...I will take a turtle over a frog anytime...hugs from Ora in KY

Paula how many people wonder if frogs and turtles are compatible? You are just a super great person that can make me laugh. When I saw that heading wild horses could not have stopped me from reading this entry. I feel the same about"there was no Monday". lol

I am not sure about turtles and frogs. Another
Headline: "LADY MISSING BUT FOUND STUCK IN MUD".
On my morning walk a turtle was crossing the
sidewalk trying to get to the woods. You guessed it I helped it get to its destination. It was moving fast but saw me and stopped. It was happy.

When I saw this headline I ben thinking I rushed over here to see if I could partake of some homegrown country wisdom and I was not disappointed and now you have got me to thinking, too. I will watch frog documentaries all day but have not run into too many turtle ones, if I do I will tell you about them. And see if we can find the answer to your question!

I would think if a frog got in where the turtles were the turtles would snap them up and swallow them in a hurry. Helen

that is a good question. I can't remember the last time I head a frog. I think I remember what they sound like. That would have to be another thing I miss about the country, the sounds of the night.

PAULA, ON CRUTCHFIELD CREEK NEAR MY BOYHOOD HOME IN MAYES COUNTY OKLAHOMA WERE BIG FROGS, PERCH FISH, SOME WATER WADING BIRDS AND COPPERHEAD SNAKES OCCASIONALLY ALONG THE BANKS.

NEVER SAW A MUD TURTLE THERE. IT WAS A FLOWING STREAM AND NO MUD. WATER WAS ONLY ABOUT A FOOT DEEP.

A YOUNGER SISTER AND I A COUPLE TIMES A MONTH WENT FROG GATHERING AT NIGHT.
ALL NEEDED WAS A TOW SACK AND STRONG BEAM FLASHLIGHT.
WE WADED ALONG IN THE WATER, SHINING THE LIGHT BEAM UP AHEAD WHERE THE BIG OLD FROG SAT, BELLOWING OUT HIS CALL TO WHATEVER IT WAS INTENDED.
SELDOM DID THEY EVER JUMP AS WE GOT NEAR, SHINING THE LIGHT ON THEIR EYES. JUST GRAB THEM BY THE BACK AND INTO THE WET SACK.
SISTER HAD TO KEEP A GRIP ON THE SACK BECAUSE THERE WAS A LOT OF JUMPING GOING ON IN THAT SACK.

AFTER CATCHING ABOUT TEN, WE WERE ON OUR WAY HOME. MOST FROGS MEASURED ABOUT EIGHTEEN INCHES LONG STRETCHED OUT.
MOTHER COOKED A LOT OF THE FROG LEGS INCLUDING THE FRONT LEGS.
AT OUR LITTLE COUNTRY STORE ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 33 SOME REGULAR CUSTOMERS FROM TULSA WOULD STOP TO GET FROGS, LIVE, THAT WE KEPT IN FRESH WATER WAITING FOR THE HAPPY CUSTOMER.

THIS DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF THE 1930s. WE BOUGHT SCHOOL CLOTHES WITH THE MONEY. THE STORE ALSO OFFERED FRESH EGGS, HONEY AND SOME FRUIT AND VEGETABLES.

MANY TULSA PEOPLE DROVE TO ARKANSAS ON THE WEEKEND.
OLD HIGHWAY 33 NOW HAS INTERSTATE 412 RUNNING PARALLEL TO FAYETTVILLE AND ON EAST.

LOTS OF WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE SINCE THOSE TIMES. sam
