Great Grandma

A sweet old German woman who cooked on a wood stove until a few years before her death. Lived alone in the country west of San Antonio until her family insisted she move in to town. She wasn't my great grandma or even my grandma but I was closer to her then to my own grandmas as one of them died when I was young and one I ncver knew. We have been able to find out a few things we always wondered about. Just simple little things that came up in conversation. Sunday I met my daughters in San Antonio and we went to a family members 80th surprise birthday party. We did a lot of reconnecting, visiting, talking, and reminincing. We used to all sit around a very large round table on a pedastal when we visited her house and ate those good home cooked meals. We wondered exactly how many people could actually sit around that table. We found the answer to be 12. We wondered what happened to that table and the built in buffet. We found out the man who leased her place for his cattle had bought the table and buffet for $25.00. What a bargain! I have her tall white iron bed which I have showed here and told about before. When they insisted she move to town she was selling some furniture so Mel and I ask to buy the bed. She said she would need it still so nothing more was said. When she passed her daughter called to say when are you coming for your bed? She said Great grandma had wanted us to have it. Any of her family could hunt deer anytime it was the season free and we all reciprecated by repairing her windmill, hauling wood etc. At the party all the great grandkids told of their special memories of spending time at her house in the country. I think the most peaceful time I can remember in my life was at her house. It was a cold winter and we were getting ready to leave after a visit with her. When we went outside it was starting to snow and there were deer in her yard.

PAULA, THANKS FOR THAT STORY. SUCH WONDERFUL GRANDMOTHERS THEY WERE. LOVING US AS THEY DID THEIR OWN CHILDREN.

HAVING US HELP THEM EAT THEIR PIECE OF PIE OR WHATEVER. COOKED GRAVY FOR ME JUST THE WAY I LIKED IT.

TAUGHT ME THE PRAYER 'NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP' WHEN A BABY. SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES.

When I was a little girl I was told I was very lucky because I not only had 2 sets of grandparents but two great-grandmas on one side and a step great-grandma on the other. I even lived with one great grandma one year going to school, and my did I meet a lot of relatives who came to visit her! I loved this story of you meeting and reminiscing about what sounds like a very nice great grandma.
