I Met A Donkey Named Teddy

Our company left and I'm so full of coffee I'm about to pop. We thought they were going to be here about a day and a half or two days at most but I guess we were having so much fun they stayed almost a week and plan to come back again next year. I guess it was good for me to get away from the computer but I missed it. Didn't get my badges this week for Club Pogo and didn't read the usual blogs or all the other things I regularly check. we slept late and then sat around the table drinking coffee and eating fresh oranges before we dressed and hit the road every morning. The house we visited yesterday was the house of a woman who never throws anything away. I have never seen so much "stuff" in all my life. It just made me want to come home and clean house. There was not a single space on top of anything including the window sills. Even outside they have animals that found their way there. Someone unloaded a donkey on them and it is soooo cute, his name is Teddy. The man part of the couple would give it to me but the woman, I don't think so. When she was teased about the amount of stuff she has, she said if I die first he gets to throw it all away. If he dies first I get to keep it all. A peacock found its way there, there are zillions of cats, guineas and I don't know what all as it was toooo cold to go outside. I could see the donkey and peacock from the dining room window where we sat all afternoon going through old family pictures and writing names on the back and talking old tales. Company is fun but its nice to get back to what is normal for me.

PAULA, YOUR POST REMINDS ME OF WHEN COMPANY CAME WHEN I WAS A CHILD, EIGHT OR TEN YEARS OLD.

IF THE COMPANY WAS OLD FRIENDS OF DAD HE WAS HAPPY TO SIT AND ENJOY TALKING OF OLD TIMES AND JOBS WORKED ON TOGETHER. ONE THING I COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND, DAD INSISTED WE KIDS SIT THERE AND HEAR IT ALL. SO MISERABLE.
WE DID NOT HAVE SPARE BEDROOMS AND IT MEANT SOME OF WE YOUNG ONES SLEEP ON A PALLAT ON THE FLOOR. THERE WERE NO MOTELS, JUST CABINS ALONG THE OLD GRAVEL HI-WAY AT THE 'MOM AND POP' FILLING STATIONS. IT NEVER ENTERED THE MIND OF 'COMPANY' TO RENT A CABIN WHICH WERE BACK BEHIND THE FILLING STATION AND OUTSIDE TOILET FARTHER BACK. WE HAD OUTSIDE TOILETS TOO.

NOW WHEN MOTHER'S RELATIVES CAME FOR A FEW DAYS, DAD TOLERATED IT THOUGH ONLY BECAUSE HE LOVED MOTHER TO ALLOW IT.
SOME OF OUR WORK HAD TO BE DID SUCH AS CHORES AND IT WAS DAD'S WAY TO SORT OF RELAX AS BEST HE COULD, FEEDING THE MULES AND SLOPPING THE HOGS AND EVEN A LITTLE FARM WORK.
MOTHER'S BROTHERS DID'NT SEEM TO MIND WHILE STAYING IN THE HOUSE AND EATING LEFTOVERS WHICH WERE FEW.
HAPPY DAY FOR DAD WHEN MOTHER'S RELATIVES REALIZED THE BIG MEALS HAD BECAME MUCH SMALLER AND THEY HAD BUSINESS AT HOME NEEDING ATTENTION.
WHEN THEIR CAR FADED IN THE DISTANCE DEAR OLD MOTHER BURST INTO TEARS AND LEANED AGAINST A TREE AND SINCERELY GRIEVED WHILE DAD FILLED THAT PIPE, SAYING, KIDS WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO CATCH UP ON.
NONE OF MOTHER'S RELATIVES LIVED ON A FARM. THESE MEMORIES RELATED WERE OF THE 1920s. NOW HERE IT IS THE YEAR 2010, SO MUCH WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE.
HAVE A NICE DAY AND NICE FUTURE. sam

I don't remember company staying often when I was growing up. We were a full house already with 9 of us youngins running round and the folks, Grandma made a dozen. We shared everything, right down to the beds and clothes. Can you imagine todays kids being so fortunate?
We sure did not mind. It was kind of fun waiting for my sister to grow out of a favorite pair of pants or a dress. Once in awhile a school friend or cousins would stay but never for more than a night. I love these memories but now? I think it would exhaust me. BabyGrands stay often and that in itself, is a true handful.
Thanks for sharing...and
Blessings Be Yours

I guess it's good for us to take some time out of our normal routine and entertain, but I always love it when I get my house back to myself. Glad you enjoyed it though, and now you can enjoy getting things back to normal.
