Living In The Fifties Tonight

Isn't there a song by that name? I had just signed offline and opened the front door to see how much it was still raining. As I opened the door the loudest clap of thunder and brightest flash of lightening flashed as everything went jet black. Do you know how dark your house is when there is not even a flicker of light? I keep a battery powered lantern for just such occasions in the living room. I knew where it was but why did I keep running into the same chair? I must have been creeping around in a circle so I started patting not wanting to break anything or knock anything to the floor. I patted things I didn't know I had but when I patted a metal grate I knew I was going the wrong direction. That was the return air to the air conditioning unit and believe me there was no air returning because there was no air. I finally patted my way to the lantern and turned it on. What a blessing! Found a battery radio right where it was supposed to be but the batteries were dead. Did you ever try to find a power bill with a lantern? Well it ain't easy but I found it and the number on the back for power outages. Now to get that lantern to shine just right so I can dial the number. Seems there was so many outages in our area I couldn't talk to a real person so I punched this and I punched that. By this time my head was starting to hurt from no air. Yes we have windows but there is a window unit in two and the couch is in front of two. Oh you know how it is just when you get the windows unlocked and opened the power will come back on and its in the middle of the night and you're sleepy. I turned the lantern off crawled into bed and tried to sleep. Just like the fifties I'm thinking, no air and no fans. A little over an hour and the bathroom light came on. Bess their hearts who ever answered the call of us spoiled people. I should call and say "thank you" tomorrow.

I keep that number on the fridge, right next to the drawer with the flashlight in it. I'm sure those folks would appreciate a thank you.

What strikes me when our power goes out is how quiet the house is. So many electronic noises we don't hear until they are off. The only people around here who aren't bothered when the power goes out are the Amish down the road a piece.

I hate losing power. We were without power for nearly a week when we had the blizzard. That was a long spell, to long but reminded us to keep a flashlight handy.

Glad they had you up and running in short time. Maybe the cooler weather will make it to Texas before long. It has been nice here in NC since we arrived. Take care, Sheila

I don't mind losing the power but I hate lightning. When it strikes close, I always seem to have a beverage in my hand and you know what happens next....

Yes, we are spoiled - but we do pay a high price for it. I bet if you called to say thank you the customer service rep might fall out of his or her chair. I bet they NEVER hear that!!

Hope everything else is well in your world Paula. I sure miss keeping up on a regular basis.
((Hugs))

I'm the same way ... prepared to a point but if the power were to go out, I'm sure I'd be bumping into the same chair over and over again, too. I do have a "crank-up" radio somewhere (gets its juice when you turn a crank around and around) but I'd need my flashlight to find it!

Power hasn't gone off in the Westward Ho for a long time, but when it does, it is cause for alarm! I think you handled jet black very well without getting injured. I can't imagine how I grew up in candle light and coil oil lamps. Guess that's why I never turn a light on at night to wander around. Doc thinks I am weird.
