What The Frac?

I never heard of the word frac and now its everywhere in our town and in our county. We see men in fast food places with new tee shirts printed with the words FRAC TECH. Big trucks up and down the highway with large equipment heading for drilling sites. Yes folks we have an oil boom going on and we don't have any land to lease out for the big bucks the oil companies are paying. We'll have to pay more for everything so be prepared the news paper tells us. They (whoever they is) have learned how to drill through shale so they can drill twice as deep as the old oil wells. We hear people are paying off thier farms and ranches with the money they are making from leasing their land. Who would have ever though our little town would have a three story motel and be filled up so that people have to use the little older two. Already they are working long hours on another new one in front of the first new one. We are getting two small new strip malls and a new buffet. Duplexs are on every vacant lot from the Toyota plant craze that didn't pan out as well as landlords planned. Now they are being rented and even older houses are in demand. It great, its exciting but what happens if the oil plays out? Will there be vacant buildings everywhere? Will we be in the middle of a ghost town?

This all sounds too good to be true. Forgive me, but after what we just went through with BP and the Deepwater Horizon, to hear that oil comnpanies are all excited because they've figured out how to drill through shale doesn't fill me with confidence. We've all seen that they're good at figuring out how to drill deeper and deeper but haven't invested a dime in figuring out how to control and environmental disaster. I hope I'm wrong to worry about this!
Best,
Marty

Who would have ever believe that all those people surrounding you that sells is going to be rich. I thought it strange that when we were working we went on vacation and their were so many oil rigs in the western part of Nebraska, but we saw maybe 2 that were working.

Take advantage of any opportunity that it provides. Anything positive in this day and age should be enjoyed. Buy the turtles some treats....

Well lets hope it doesn't play out in the next thirty years. Tell 'em to pump and pump and get us free of the ARAB oil.

I know we need an alternate energy and we have folks working on it, but until then y'all have to feed old Blue and and your truck! then you have to buy stuff to thrill the cows.

Glad for your town, how it last and lasts.

Well if you ever watched the new version of Battlestar Galactica or Caprica, that is where the word "frac" came from.

I don't think your town has anything to really worry about, but it is exciting to see the little boom yall are having.

Well, this is an interesting development. You never know when new technology will turn a done for place back in time to booming again. They better enjoy it while it lasts!
