Birds Have Bad Days Too

A few years ago John's daughter found a pretty yellow parakeet in a tree in their yard. She was able to catch the bird and put it in a cage where she gave it a home in their kitchen. They have two cats in a cage and let them out to exercise sometime. The cats were after the poor little bird so she moved it to the living room beside a window. I guess it had as good a life as a bird in a cage can have. Plenty of food and water, a cuttle bone and gravel in the floor of the cage. A toy or two and a bell. The happy life came to an end recently. When they went into the living room early one morning there was something drapped over the bird cage and the bird was missing. On closer look it was a snake. She was able to get the cage out the front door and determine the snake was not a rattlesnake but a chicken snake. She could see the buldge in the snake where the poor little bird was. She was able to shoot the snake (I know chicken snakes are good snakes) but she was mad at it for eating her bird. How did the snake get into the house? They don't know but I would be searching for every little hole and closing them up. As I've said before they live in a very old farm house with lots of farm junk around. She hasn't seen the rattlesnake again that she shot at so she thinks it died. Once they spent a lot of time making a cute little garden with a water fall in their front yard. It wasn't long before two Water Moccasions took up residence there so they completely destroyed the pretty water feature which sent the snakes packing probably far to the back to the stock tank.

Wow! This is the kind of story that could only happen in Texas. I really feel sorry for the poor little bird!

yeah, we deal with the mocassins and copperheads here since we're so close to the pond - luckily not INSIDE the house - at least yet! :)

I missed a couple entries, so sad about your favorite Taco place burning. I hope they can still make a go of it. It's rough when young, ambitious families loose so much, and a son too.
So sad.
As for the demise of the little yellow bird, awwww. Danged snake. Snakes, spiders, scorpions and fire ants are about the worse things I can live without on my visits to your fine state of TX.

I would have shot him too! Little did he know the bird would be his last meal. Snakes are dreadful and I hate all species. Even the good snakes will make me hurt myself..Lol.

I am with you DD. I hate all snakes especially one that gets in the house and on my bed. I was in that bed and I looked up and it was all coiled up. I left promptly and got my 13 year old son to take it out. Now that is cowardly of a mom but he wasn't afraid. To bad about the yellow bird.

You do have the most interesting tales, some for sure, are unique to TEXAS! Love them. I have been witness to several of those 'bulges' in snakes. And of course, I know, that is nature at work.

In my life I have killed the 'wrong' snake because of surprise or just plan, he made me mad! Love from NC

OMG...I think I would have been mad enough to shoot the snake too, grr...and yes I'd be doing a lot of patching to make sure there are no more snakes in the house, yikes!! ~ Wen

Poor little bird. Glad that she got that snake. I bet it was scared almost to death then the thing had to finish it off. Helen

I feel bad for the little bird, but some snakes are good to have around. I guess it's like anything else. If I had to be the one to kill the steer or chicken, I'd be eating peanut butter sandwichews the rest of my life.

Poor bird. We used to keep chickens and I've seen chicken snakes that swallowed whole eggs and then couldn't make it back through the chicken wire till they wrapped themselves around something and broke the egg. Snakes are interesting but I sure don't like them in the house. Did you find out about the migas? they are eggs scrambled with crispy tortilla slices, onions, tomato, peppers and cilantro...pretty tasty in the mornings...around here they are usually served with sliced avocado and covered with grated cheese...I'm making myself hungry. Mercy that is the third story I have heard that a snake has invaded someone's home that is so scary. One I heard it came down the fireplace.
Glad you are back and hope you had a good time.
