Pear Apples

John insisted on cutting a pear apple off a plant today and cutting it open to show me the inside. I imagine after all these years I have seen one before but when a man has too much time on his hands----well---. He took a taste and tried to get me to. I would have but I don't know when was the last time he washed his pocket knife plus he cut it on the sand. I asked him if it was sweet and he said kind of bitter/sweet. I know some people do make jelly from them and it didn't look too bad inside. I will taste one someday in cleaner circumstances. The cows like them. John had to tell me this story too, you know time on his hands? When he was a little boy a friend from the city came to spend the week-end with him. They were playing far from the house on the ranch where John "runs" his cattle. Country for where he keeps his cattle, don't know why they call it running them. His Daddy used to own part of this ranch many years ago. He and the little visitor got hungry and didn't want to walk to the house so they started eating pear apples and mesquite beans. That night they both got deathly sick especially the city boy who wasn't used to eating strange things. He had to be taken to the hospital and John got in trouble. They aren't poisonous but they just ate too many.

oh, i'd definitely want to try one. since posting them on my blog earlier today, and folks mentioning the jam, i want to taste them. the cactus i photographed is on someone else's land, tho, and i don't want to stop and trespass...

i guess it's not different than getting a bad stomach ache from eating too green apples. :)

I have tried them, I believe the boys just called them catus apples. We had them in Cuba.
Good entry, what a sissy, what could he have cut with that pocket knife??? LOL

As always, a good tale.

Be sure and let us know when you finally taste one. By the way, the tree in our front yard is a maple. Rick's already talking about moving it to the side or back and put a live oak in front...we'll see...Have a great week, Sheila

I know the Indians used to crush mesquite beans to make flour but mixing them with pear apples and overeating was a little strong for little boy's stomachs.

This is why I keep beef jerky with me at all times!

Paula, I love your adventurous western tales. I remember some jars of Prickly Pear Honey for sale at a truck stop, Clines Corner on I-40 in New Mexico. I have regretted not bringing one home.
Let us know when you taste a pear apple.

Bitter sweet??? I don't think I would like them I am so stuck in my ways, I am almost as bad as Joe. I bet they could make a kid really sick if they stuffed themselves with them. I love your header.

Next time take your own clean knife. Sounds like something interesting to eat or make jelly with. Love that header picture. Helen

Yuck. Pear Apples sound delicious (who wouldn't like a pear or an apple). But slicing a node off a cactus with a dirty knife and chowing down on it. Hmmm ... I think I'd take a pass, too!
