The Rock

This rock was located in front of the old school that I wrote about in my last entry. It now sits in front of the new namesake school donated by a former student, Bob Roberts. I read somewhere that children used to sit on it to eat their lunch. I wonder what they took for lunch back then. Edmund Lieck Elementary School was designed to accomodate 800 students. The most up-to-date technology has been installed including 200 desktop computers, 80netbook computers, 60 laptop computers, 81 printers and many more technical advantages too numerous to mention. I guess what I'm trying to say is wouldn't Edmund Lieck be in awe?

My mom told me that when she was a kid, she sometimes took lard-and-sugar sandwiches for her lunch (yuck). All the kids used a lard-can with a bail on it as a lunchbox.

Yes, YES, and probably amazed that someone made all the fuss over his name, BUT PROUD!
Mama took a container of beans for lunch with a biscuit.

If only that rock could talk. It's wonderful that they took it to the new school!

I'm glad the rock was moved. My mom told me that as kids, they also used a lard can for a lunch box. They lived on the farm and big breakfasts were cooked every morning. She said their school lunches usually were left-overs from breakfast...biscuits and ham, bacon or salt pork with molasses. Sounds pretty good right now. I last ate one of my grandma's baking powder biscuits over 50 years ago...wish I had one now!
